Luisa Etxenike (born on 10 July 1957, San Sebastián, Spain) is a highly regarded, award-winning author from the Basque Country[1]. She has published several novels, short story collections, poetry collections, plays and essays. She is also a regular contributor of cultural and political opinion pieces in leading newspapers such as ''El País'', as well as, to online cultural platforms and radio programmes. Etxenike’s work has received many awards including the prestigious French government distinction of Chevalier de l' Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the Basque literary award ''Premio Euskadi de Literatura''[2]. Fluent in Spanish, French and English, she has translated the works of several French authors, including the filmmaker Claude Lanzmann.

Etxenike studied law and after a brief period working as a lawyer, she left the legal profession to devote herself full-time to writing and teaching. She regularly teaches courses on gender studies and narrative theory at the University of the Basque Country and at prominent universities worldwide: Columbia University, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, University of East Anglia. She is a frequent guest lecturer at several American and Australian universities including Dartmouth College, Emory University, La Trobe University, University of New South Wales, and Flinders University.

She organises local writing workshops[3], [4]directs an annual women’s literary festival in San Sebastián (Un mundo de escritoras)[5], and is the founder and director of the online cultural platform, Canal Europa[6].

She is a committed and active member of her community for which she was awarded the Medalla al Mérito Ciudadano[7], (Medal for Exemplary Citizenship) from the City of San Sebastián.
