Critical Reception

Domestic

Rediff gave the film 1.5 out of 5 and said: The biggest con job in the film is its editing, with the cuts not even mildly concerned with maintaining continuity of emotion...A Gentleman is an assumed piece of filmmaking, where the small-concerns-interrupting-big-moments kind of humour doesn't quite fit the slapdash setting.[11]

Times of India rated the film 3 stars out of 5 and concluded, "The film would have been a perfect entertainer had it held its cards closer to its chest. However, it still has plenty bang for your buck."[12]

FirstPost gave the film 2.5 out of 5 and concluded: The comic parts of A Gentleman score over the action and as an action-comedy it falls short of taking any real risks.[13]

Rajeev Masand on CNN-News18 gave the film 1.5 out of 5, saying: By the time the film finally ended, I was bored and slumped over in my seat. I’m going with one-and-a-half out five for A Gentleman: Sundar, Susheel, Risky. You have to wonder how films like this continue to get made.[14]

Hindustan Times gave the film 3 out of 5, saying: A Gentleman is not a flawless film, it is full of cliches and typecasts the characters.... - be it casting black men as the foot soldiers of the villain, their language or even the ringtone of his phone. Even the climax action sequence conforms to decades old cliche - the hero’s anger is at its worst when poked about the heroine. The songs of A Gentleman also disrupt the narrative and do not take the story any further. But Raj and DK have managed to narrate the plain and full-of-cliches story in their own quirky style and their dialogues and the screenplay make it fun to watch.[15]

NDTV gave the film 2 out of 5 concluding: "Style over substance: that's the story of A Gentleman. Strictly for Sid Malhotra fans."[16]

UAE

The movie released on 24th of August in Dubai, UAE with early reviews being mixed.

Manjusha Radhakrishnan of Gulf News gave it 2 out of 5 stars saying, "Barring a few well-executed action sequences and witty exchange between Malhotra and his mate at work, the film leaves you unmoved.[17]" Meanwhile, Dollz in Dubai gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars calling it a masala entertainer and wrote "It’s a big step for Siddharth Malhotra who manages to carry the film and commands the screen with his presence. Yes, he’s good looking but he pulls off the action sequences really well."[18]

Box Office

India Today reported that the film opened to a poor start at the box office, with trade analyst Taran Adarsh citing that it earned only Rs 4.04 crore on its opening day. Total collection of movie in his weekend is 13 crore India biz.[19]
