Tangled: The Series is an American animated musical fantasy television series that premiered on Disney Channel on March 10, 2017 as a movie, and began airing regular episodes from March 24, 2017. It is based on Disney's 2010 computer-animated film Tangled directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard. It takes place between the original movie and the short Tangled Ever After. A teaser trailer was released during the Disney Channel Original Movie, The Swap. It began as a Disney Channel Original Movie, titled Tangled: Before Ever After, which premiered on March 10, 2017.[1][2][3]
The series will feature new songs from Alan Menken, who wrote and scored the songs for the original movie, and Glenn Slater.[4] Mandy Moore, Zachary Levi, Donna Murphy, M.C. Gainey, Ron Perlman, Jeffrey Tambor, and Paul F. Tompkins reprise their roles from the film. On February 15, 2017, it was announced that the series had been renewed for a second season ahead of the series premiere.
Plot
Since being freed from Gothel and reunited with her birth parents, King Frederic and Queen Arianna of Corona, Rapunzel adjusts to her life as their daughter and continues to have different misadventures with her boyfriend Eugene Fitzherbert, Pascal the Chameleon, Maximus the Horse, and her new handmaiden Cassandra.
Characters
Main
- Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore[5], Ivy George as her young self) – The eighteen-year-old Princess of Corona. She tries her best to become a good future queen, even though her naive ways get her into trouble.
- Eugene Fitzherbert (voiced by Zachary Levi[5]) – Formerly known as Flynn Rider, he is a reformed thief, Rapunzel's boyfriend. He has a mutual dislike and mistrust for Cassandra.
- Cassandra (voiced by Eden Espinosa[5]) – Rapunzel's best friend, a lady-in-waiting who is the adopted daughter of the Captain of the Guards. She has a strong dislike for Eugene.
- Queen Arianna (voiced by Julie Bowen[5][6]) – The Queen of Corona, and Rapunzel's birth mother. She wants her daughter to follow her heart and do what she believes in. As an early coronation present, she had given Rapunzel a blank journal to fill its pages with her own adventures.
- King Frederic (voiced by Clancy Brown[5]) – The King of Corona, and overprotective father of Rapunzel. Since the night his only child was taken, he naturally fears and despises magic of any kind.
Recurring
- Pascal and Maximus (voiced by Dee Bradley Baker[5]) – Pascal is a chameleon who is the pet/best friend of Rapunzel, whose backstory is revealed in "Pascal's Story". Maximus is a white stallion originally owned by the Captain of the Guards and later by Eugene, with the nose of a bloodhound.
- Corona Royal Guards – The Royal Guards that serve King Frederic.
- Captain of the Guards (voiced by M. C. Gainey[5]) – The unnamed leader of the Royal Guards and Cassandra's adoptive father.
- Pete (voiced by Sean Hayes[5]) – A member of the Royal Guards.
- Stan (voiced by Diedrich Bader[5]) – A member of the Royal Guards.
- Pub Thugs – A bunch of thugs that hang out at a pub and were befriended by Rapunzel and Eugene.
- Hook Foot (voiced by Jeff Ross[5]) – The hook-footed brother of Hook Hand. Hook Foot takes the place of his brother who is on a world tour as a concert pianist.
- Big Nose (voiced by Jeffrey Tambor[5]) – A big-nosed thug that is the romantic of the thugs.
- Shorty (voiced by Paul F. Tompkins[5]) – A short, old, and crazy thug.
- Vladimir (voiced by Charles Halford[5]) – A thug in a bull-horned helmet that is the strongest of the thugs. He was previously voiced by Richard Kiel in the movie.
- Attila Buckethead (voiced by Steven Blum[5]) – A thug in a full metal helmet whose passion is baking. He becomes Monty's assistant in "One Angry Princess". He was previously voiced by Byron Howard in the movie.
- Uncle Monty (voiced by Richard Kind[5]) – An elderly shopkeeper in Corona who has personal issues with Rapunzel.
- Nigel (voiced by Peter MacNicol[5]) – King Frederic's advisor.
- Xavier (voiced by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje[5]) – A blacksmith.
- Lance Strongbow (voiced by James Monroe Iglehart[5]) – Eugene's old childhood friend and former partner-in-crime from his younger thieving days. His real name is revealed to be Arnwaldo Schnitz. He debuted in Episode 6.
- Varian (voiced by Jeremy Jordan[5]) – A young alchemist who Rapunzel first came to discover the reasons of her golden hair's return and its new mystical properties. Unfortunately, his "scientific genius" destroyed the results of the 80 various tests he performed on it.
- Quirin (voiced by Jonathan Banks[5]) – Varian's father.
Others
- Mother Gothel (voiced by Donna Murphy) – The deceased adoptive mother of Rapunzel who abducted her as an infant due to her golden hair's unique healing abilities, which she then hoarded for herself to sustain her youth and beauty. She aged into dust at the end of the original movie. She is first seen in a nightmare of Rapunzel's shortly after she mysteriously regrowing her 70-feet golden hair and its new mystical abilities. Gothel claimed that she had "risen from the dead" and that it was time for Rapunzel to return to her tower where she would be "safe and secure."
- The Stabbington Brothers (both voiced by Ron Perlman) – The former partners-in-crime of Eugene, whom he betrayed in his thieving days as Flynn Rider. They had worked with Mother Gothel to get Rapunzel back in order to get revenge. They debut in "Cassandra v. Eugene".
