Sainte Marie La Grand’Grange in Saint-Chamond, Loire, France, is a primary through secondary school founded by the Marist Fathers in 1850, and currently run by the Society of Jesus.

History

The Marist Fathers founded a college in 1850 at the invitation of the mayor of Saint Chamond. When expelled by the political regime in 1877 they built outside the town and by 1889 had about 245 students, most all borders. This became a college in 1923, the year the chapel was built.

In 1969 closure at Saint Louis School caused an influx of students and in 1973 a merger took place with Fenlon Girls College, leading to the new name Sainte Marie-Fénelon School. The primary division had been added in 1972.

In 1976 the Marist Fathers were no longer able to support the school and the Bishop took it over, trusting its management to the Society of Jesus. In 1989 Jean Delay merged with Sainte Marie primary school, bringing also its kindergarten.

In June 2004 Sainte Marie-Fénelon merged with the professional Lycée La Grand'Grange and the name of the institution became the present Sainte Marie-La Grand'Grange. It is one of the largest Catholic schools in the Loire department with 1,909 pupils.

In 2009 the Jesuits accepted from the Bishop full ownership of the school, which became the fifteenth school run by the Society of Jesus in France.[1]

The school has an active alumni association[2] and photographically documented historical record.[3]

Schools

In 2016 there were 302 students at the primary level, up to age 10, and 1,055 students in the middle school, ages 10 to 15. The secondary school (lycée) had 362 students pursuing three majors: economic and social, literary, and scientific. The technical finishing school had 168 students, with 22 more in BTS studies.[4]

The middle school enjoys a near-perfect passing rate (99.5-100%).[5] The secondary school was rated by l'express as 2nd among 29 schools in the Loire department in 2016.[6]
