Richard Hope (born 22 June 1978 in Stockton) is an English footballer who currently club captain of English League Two club Shrewsbury Town. He is a defender and wears the number 5 shirt for the club.

Career

Hope began his career as a trainee at Blackburn Rovers but never played a match for the Lancashire club. A month's loan spell at Darlington brought him his first league experience. He played five Div.3 (IV) matches before the deal was made permanent, signing on a free transfer.

He was a regular for Darlington for the following season-and-a-half, but fell out of favour in the first half of the 1998-99 season. Another loan spell followed, but this time he was only on loan a week before the move was made permanent.

He spent four-and-a-half years at his new club Northampton Town, where he clocked up over 150 appearances. Northampton were a Division Two club for three seasons and were in Division Three for one season during his time there.

Leaving to join Division Three club York City in August 2003, Hope was a regular, but spent the whole season on a rolling monthly contract. Relegation came for York, and Hope decided to join Chester City for 2004-05.

He made 28 appearances in the newly-named League Two before joining Shrewsbury on free transfer. He has become a first-choice regular for the Shropshire club.
