Billy the Puppet
Billy is the puppet that has appeared in Saw (film), as well as Saw 2. This evil looking puppet is the creation of John Kramer, more commonly known as the Jigsaw Killer.
Characteristics
Billy seems to be a ventriloquist dummy, as his jaw is movable in order to give the suggestion that he’s talking, similar to that of a dummy’s jaw. However, Billy is always seen moving “on his own”, most likely by use of remote control. His face is white, and his protruding cheeks have red spirals painted on them. His eyes are black, with red pupils, and his head is topped with black, messy hair.
Billy is always depicted as wearing a black tuxedo, with a white undershirt and a red bowtie. He is often seen riding a tricycle, which again must be by use of remote control by Kramer.
The main purpose of Billy is to deliver pre-recorded messages to victim’s of Jigaw’s traps, and he does so with an almost demonic voice, often appearing on a television screen to distribute the details of the sadistic traps. He has also been known to emit bizarre laughs.
Appearances
Saw
In the first Saw movie, Billy is seen on a television set by Amanda, telling her about the contraption wired into her jaws. Once Jigsaw explains where she must find the key to unlock the trap, Billy is seen again, congratulating Amanda on her success, wheeling into the room on his tricycle to deliver the message of her freedom.
Later, Adam remembers seeing the puppet in his apartment when the lights went out. While searching through the dark rooms using his camera flash, the puppets eerie laugh rings through the apartment, and Adam hits it with his bat until it stops.
When Detectives Tapp and Sing uncovered Jigsaw's latest hideout, they snooped around his desk, pulling off many blankets to reveal different contraptions of the sick mastermind. The two detectives are shocked when they find the Billy puppet staring back at them under one of the blankets.
Saw II
In the second Saw movie, Billy is seen on the screen at the beginning of the film, giving Michael hints about the Death-Mask he's wearing.
Later, when the detectives discover Jigsaw's new hideout, several officers rush up a cages staircase, and are greeted at the top by Billy, who wheels in on his tricycle and laughs, moments before the fence around the stairs become electrified, and one of the rigged steps sets off the trap.
Saw III
It is expected that Billy will make his last appearance in Saw 3, as he has been seen in the trailers released.
Origin
It is revealed in the comic Saw: Rebirth that Billy was created by John while working in a toy factory.
Other Releases
Since the release of the first Saw movie, different toys and puppets of Billy have been produced, ranging from a palm-sized figurine with an oversized head, to a life-sized puppet, complete with a tricycle.
Quotes
To Amanda
- "Hello Amanda. You don't know me, but I know you. I want to play a game. Here's what happens if you lose. The device you are wearing is hooked into your upper and lower jaw. When the timer in the back goes off, your mouth will be permanently ripped open. Think of it like a reverse bear trap. Here, I'll show you. There is only one key to open the device. It's in the stomach of your dead cell mate. Look around Amanda. Know that I'm not lying. You better hurry up, live or die, make your choice."
- "Congratulations. You are still alive. Most people are so ungrateful to be alive. But not you. Not anymore."
To Michael
- "Hello, Michael. I want to play a game. So far, in what loosely could be called your life, you have made a living watching others. Society would call you an informant. A rat. A snitch. I call you unworthy of the body you possess. Of the life you've been given. Now we will see if you are willing to look inward, rather than outward, to give up the one thing you rely on in order to go on living. The device around your neck is a death mask. The mask is on a string timer. If you do not locate the key in time, the mask will close. Think of it like a Venus Flytrap. What you're looking at right now is your own body, not more than two hours ago. Don't worry, you're sound asleep, and can't feel a thing. Taking into account that you are at a great disadvantage here, I am going to give you a hint as to where I have hidden the key. So listen carefully. The hint is this: It's right before your eyes. How much blood would you shed to stay alive, Michael? Live or die... Make your choice."
