"You Make It Feel Like Christmas"
Song

"You Make It Feel Like Christmas" is a song recorded by American singer Gwen Stefani for her 2017 holiday album of the same name. It features guest vocals from Blake Shelton and was released on September 22, 2017 as the album's lead single through Interscope. The track was written by Stefani, Justin Tranter, Shelton, and Michael Busbee while production was handled by busbee and Eric Valentine. It has been used in Starbucks' "Togetherness" commercial to promote its Christmas campaign.

Production and release

In July 2017, Stefani shared that she had been active in studio recording sessions and planned to release some of her new material before the end of the year.[1] The title of the track was first shared on August 2, 2017 when it appeared as a published song on GEMA's official website.[2] Because of the registered song title, several music critics suggested that Stefani may be recording a holiday album.[3] On September 18 of the same year, the singer took to her social media accounts and claimed that she "had something big planned for the holidays" and would release more information later that week. Following the announcement, she revealed the track listing and album title for You Make It Feel Like Christmas, a collection of classic Christmas songs and newly-recorded tracks.[4] Stefani then stated that "You Make It Feel Like Christmas" would be released as the album's lead single to coincide with the chance for her fans to pre-order the parent album.[5] The song was then distributed as a digital download on September 22, 2017 through Stefani's record label, Interscope.[6][7]

The track was written by Stefani, Justin Tranter, Shelton, and busbee while production was handled by busbee and Eric Valentine.[2][8]

Composition and lyrics

"You Make It Feel Like Christmas" runs for 2 minutes and 37 seconds.[7] Megan Armstrong from Billboard described the single as a mix of both "Stefani's pop style" and "Shelton's country roots", although she felt it emphasized the former rather than the latter.[9] A Christmas tune, the duet was described as "an upbeat, old-timey, country-esque Yuletide song" by Noisey's Alex Robert Ross.[10] In the chorus, Stefani and Shelton sing: "Sleigh bells singing 'Hallelujah' / Stars are shining on us too / I want to thank you, baby / You make it feel like Christmas".[5]

Critical reception

Ryan Reed of Rolling Stone said the Christmas song recalled "the chug of The Supremes' 1966 hit 'You Can't Hurry Love'" while the staff at Entertainment Weekly called the song infectious.[8][11] Mike Nied from Idolator suggested that Stefani and Shelton's track "may have something that will live up to Mariah Carey’s defining classic 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'".[12]

Stereogum's Tom Breihan called the track "a knowingly silly love song" but claimed that "it’s nowhere near the standards of 'Oi To The World!'", a holiday song by The Vandals that Stefani in No Doubt had covered in 1997.[13] Noisey's Alex Robert Ross was divided, calling it "almost quite fun if you live somewhere unnaturally cold during the fall".[10]

Usage in media

"You Make It Feel Like Christmas" has been used in Starbucks' commercial to promote its Christmas campaign. The song was also featured in the movie A Bad Moms Christmas.
