Simdesk may be the real life identity of fictional company Virtudyne, as presented in a 4-part series of articles by TheDailyWTF, from October 10-13. This series documents the rise and protracted fall (the company is currently alive) of a disastrous venture to complete a Microsoft Office Killer, using Visual Basic 6, in six months.

Clues

Besides the similarities in the products offered by both companies, an additional clue can be found on an older version of Simdesk's website [1], claiming that the company's products run on a "World Wide Server". This expression is also mentioned at one point in the third part of the Virtudyne story.
