Fairfield School was set up in the late 1800s in the suburb of Fairfield, established by William Martin. It is situated on Sickles St, a small culdesac near the SH1 motorway.
It has 11 full time teaching staff and 5 part-time teachers, plus numerous other staff i.e. teacher aides, secretaties, librarians. It has a thriving music programme run by the more than capable Alison Tay, a speciallist music teacger who as well as teaching the curriculum music takes the Orchestra and Recorder Ensemble. The school also boasts several top sports teams, a choir, rock band, gifted education programme and a theatre sports group.
Most of the staff at Fairfield are so impressed with the school's success both educational and otherwise that they have chosen to send their children to Fairfield School, even if they live really far away.
The school is in fact so popular, that a zone has had to be put in place to avoid class sizes that are too big.
It has a healthy eating policy that rivals most other schools in Dunedin.
