List of Avenged Sevenfold members
Avenged Sevenfold is an American heavy metal band from Huntington Beach, California. Formed in 1999, the group originally featured vocalist M. Shadows (Matthew Sanders), guitarist Zacky Vengeance (Zachary Baker), bassist Matt Wendt and drummer The Rev (James Sullivan).[1] Wendt was replaced early by Justin Sane (Justin Meacham), who performed on the group's debut album Sounding the Seventh Trumpet before leaving the band the following year after attempting to commit suicide.[2] Dameon Ash (Frank Melcom) replaced Meacham for the album's promotional touring cycle, while lead guitarist Synyster Gates (Brian Haner, Jr.) joined the band after the album's initial release.[2] Johnny Christ (Jonathan Seward) became Avenged Sevenfold's fourth bassist in time for the recording of the 2003 album Waking the Fallen.[3]
The lineup of Avenged Sevenfold remained constant for many years, including the albums City of Evil (2005) and Avenged Sevenfold (2007), before Sullivan died on December 28, 2009 due to an accidental overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol.[4] The band considered breaking up after the drummer's death,[5] but later returned with their fifth album Nightmare featuring Mike Portnoy on drums.[6] Portnoy remained with the band for tour dates throughout 2010, before leaving the group as planned at the end of the year.[7] Former Confide drummer Arin Ilejay was later announced as Portnoy's replacement in January 2011.[8] Ilejay became a full-time member in 2013,[9] featuring on the group's sixth studio album Hail to the King.[10] Ilejay later left the group in July 2015 due to "creative differences" between himself and other members.[11]
In November 2015, Brooks Wackerman was announced as Ilejay's replacement.[12] He was featured on the band's seventh studio album The Stage.[13]
