Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) is an Indian institution for open and distance learning established by the government of Tamil Nadu, India. It was founded in 2002 and is based in Chennai.
Tamil Nadu Open University is one of five universities approved by the University Grants Commission to offer distance learning outside its state of establishment.[1] It offers 134 courses of study at levels from certificate to post graduate and has 13 academic schools, five support diivisions, a media centre and a network of learner support centres across Tamil Nadu.[citation needed]
Students are admitted under two admission cycles, calendar year (January to June) and academic year (July to December). They include those living in remote and rural areas, working people, housewives, physically handicapped and SC/ST students. In November 2017, a 67-year-old woman received an MA in history from Madras University after Tamil Nadu Open University admitted her to the higher education course she had not been able to pursue earlier in her life.[2][3]
