Kentrell DeSean Gaulden (born October 20, 1999), known professionally as YoungBoy Never Broke Again (or, simply, YoungBoy),[1][2] is an American rapper from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.[3][4] He gained local attention after the release of his single "Homicide" featuring fellow Baton Rouge rapper Scotty Cain in December 2015 and later widespread attention after the release of his single, "38 Baby" in August 2016.[5][6] His most recent mixtape, fed babies, was released in November 2017, 2017.[7][8]
Early life
Gaulden was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and was raised largely by his grandmother. He dropped out of 9th grade to begin his rapping career and, soon after, was arrested for robbery and sent to a detention center in Tallulah, Louisiana. While there, Gaulden began writing lyrics for his debut project.[1]
On August 23, 2017, a Baton Rouge judge sentenced Gaulden to a suspended 10-year prison term and three years of active probation for his involvement in a drive-by shooting.[9]
Career
Gaulden released his first mixtape, Life Before Fame, as NBA YoungBoy in 2014. A string of other mixtapes followed including Mind of a Menace, Mind of a Menace 2, and Mind of a Menace 3. His October 2016 mixtape, 38 Baby, received widespread attention after its release.[1][5] The mixtape featured fellow Baton Rouge natives, Lil Snupe Boosie Badazz and Kevin Gates.[6]
In December 2016, YoungBoy was arrested in Austin, Texas on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder in connection with an alleged drive-by shooting.[5][10] While in jail in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana,[5] YoungBoy released several songs, including "Win or Lose",[11] "Don't Matter",[12] and "Too Much".[13] YoungBoy was released from prison in May 2017 after taking a plea deal and posting bail.[4] A week after leaving prison, YoungBoy released the single, "Untouchable".[14]
In July 2017, YoungBoy released a video for his song, "41", that included cameos from notable artists including, Meek Mill Young Thug, 21 Savage, Boosie Badazz, and Yo Gotti.[3] On August 3, 2017, he released his mixtape, AI YoungBoy, which has features from Peewee Longway and Yo Gotti.[7][8] The single, "Untouchable", peaked at number 39 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.[15] Also in August 2017, YoungBoy announced the AI YoungBoy tour.[16]
