Windows Live Mail desktop (once rumored to have been renamed to Windows Live Mail Center) is an upcoming e-mail client from Microsoft's Windows Live set of products. It is intended to be a replacement for Outlook Express on Windows XP, as well as a superset of Windows Mail on Windows Vista. It has been indicated that it will contain a superset of Windows Mail's features, and provide integration with Windows Live Mail.

Overview

Windows Live Mail desktop is being developed by the same team that wrote Windows Mail. According to a March 3 2006 blog post from a Microsoft employee[1], it will contain all the new features in Windows Mail, and add to that the following:

  • Similar visual style to Windows Live Mail
  • Synchronization with Hotmail contacts
  • Support for RSS feeds, using the same RSS capabilities as the upcoming Internet Explorer 7, including the ability to reply directly via email to the author of the author of an item that appears in an RSS feed, as well as multiple feed aggregation into a single folder
  • Multi-line message lists, as in Outlook
  • Emoticons
  • In-line spell checking
  • Separate inbox folders for different POP accounts
  • Better picture/photo messaging (PhotoMail)

A public version of Windows Live Mail desktop has been released
