In the summer of 1998, China experienced massive flooding of parts of the Yangtze River, resulting in 3,004 dead, 14 million left homeless and $24 billion in economic loss.

Timeline
- August 1: The periphery levee in Waijiang, Hezhen of Jiayu County, collapsed first.
- August 5: Periphery levees in Paizhou, Jiujiang, Jiangxin area of Jiayu County collapsed consecutively.
- August 5: the lower reaches of the Yangtze River collapsed at Jiujiang and Jiangxinzhou.
- August 7: The main levee of the Yangtze collapsed.
