Arshad Ali Khan is an Indian classical singer and teacher of Kirana Gharana. [1] He descends from the family lineage of Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan and Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, who are deemed as the founders of Kirana Gharana. [2] He got education in music from his maternal uncles Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan and Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan, the primary masters of Kirana Gharana musical style. [3] [4]

Arshad Ali is one of the few prodigies to live up to their initial promise. [4] [5] [6] He has performed world over and is one of the few contemporary singers of the Kirana Gharana to have assimilated the essence of the meer-khand vistar or development, typical to the gharana. [3][4] [7] He is a musician teacher at ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata.[1]

Early Life and Education

Born in the principal family of Kirana Gharana musicians, Arshad Ali Khan was absorbed as a young scholar by ITC Sangeet Research Academy in 1990 at the age of six. He was trained there under the able guidance of his maternal uncles Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan and Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan. [4][1][7]

At the age of 9, he was described as the biggest sensation of Sawai Gandharva Samelan, following his performance on a special invitation by Pt. Bhimsen Joshi on the occasion of his 75th birthday. [7] [8]

Career

Khan has performed in numerous music festivals world over, including Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Festival in Pune [6] Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan in Jalandhar, [9] Saptak Music Festival, [10] Karavalli Festival, Mangalore, Sangeet Natak Akademi’s ‘Sangit Pratibha’ in Patna, Gharana Sammelan in Mumbai, Bhatkhande Sangeet Sammelan, Doverlane music festival in Kolkata, Classical Music Festival organised by Parveen Begum Smruti Music and Educational Trust in Bangalore, [3] Legends of India Baithak in Delhi, [11] and many more. Apart from performing in most prestigious music festivals , he has performed extensively at numerous ITC Sangeet Sammelans across the country. [6]

He is an empanelled artist in ICCr [12] and his international tours taking him all over USA, Canada, Europe and the Middle East and Singapore have been outstanding successes. He has performed at the Theatre de la Ville in Paris, the Trophen Theatre in Amsterdam, the Indo-Persian Festival of Music at Marseille, the Mawazine Festival in Morocco, Raag Mala in California, Bengal Foundation Music Conference in Bangladesh, and many more. Awards and recognitions

Arshad Ali Khan was awarded Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar 2013 by Sangeet Natak Akademi. [14] He is the recipient of several other awards including JADUBHATTA PURASHKAR, Bharatiya Sansad Best Vocalist Award, ‘Best Young Talent of the Year’ by Rasa and Melting Pot Productions, SUR JYOTSNA NATIONAL AWARD FOR BEST MALE VOCALIST BY LOKMAT MAHARASHTRA and VIDYA SAGAR AWARD FROM N.C.P.A MUMBAI.
