Barry Wom, full name Barrington Womble MBE, is the drummer of fictional band The Rutles (also known as the Pre-Fab Four), and is played by John Halsey. He is based on Beatles drummer Ringo Starr.
History
Barrington joined the band when he was found in the van of the three existing members. They persuaded him to change his name to Barry Wom to save time, and his hairstyle to save Brylcreem. His band achieved success in late 1963, and kept getting bigger. They were followed by controversy, for example lead singer Ron Nasty's falsely reported claims to be "bigger than God", and the band's excessive use of tea.
Barry was engaged to marry his childhood sweetheart Brenda in Liverpool, but after a mix-up in the church which was filled with Rutles fans, he ended up married to someone else. Brenda was accidentally married to a party of Scotsmen from Hull. This incident was the inspiration for his ballad When You Find the Girl of Your Dreams in the Arms of Some Scotsmen from Hull.
Barry is known as "the noisy one". He says his ambition is to be "a hairdresser or two", something he eventually achieves after the demise of The Rutles.
At a performance for the Queen, Ron Nasty dedicates a song to Barry's mother. He also once spent a year in bed as a tax dodge. Also, during the break up of The Rutles when everyone was suing each other, Barry accidentally sued himself.
