Owens and Zayn faced Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura in a tag team match at Clash of Champions with McMahon and Bryan as special guest referees and their jobs on the line. At the event, they defeated Nakamura and Orton after a fast count by Bryan. Later on, Zayn and Owens would both score non-title victories over WWE Champion AJ Styles on respective episodes of SmackDown Live, thus earning a title opportunity against Styles in a handicap match at the Royal Rumble. In the following week, Zayn and Owens' faced Styles, Nakamura, and Orton in handicap match which was no count-out, anything-goes as ordered by Shane McMahon.
