My name is Mackenzie - I'm a current undergraduate student at Rice University studying Policy Studies, Chemistry, and Latin American Studies. I'll be editing Wikipedia for a class i'm taking this semester called Human Development in Global and Local Contexts. I hope to add substantial content to articles relating to Marianismo and Machismo in Latin America, or to the article topic of Refugee Women and Children.

I am interested in the topic of Marianismo because while studying abroad in Costa Rica, I learned that the way in which religion is interpreted often sets high expectations for the behavior and life of a women in Latin America, often going as far as to affect her personal autonomy. I would really love to explore more the background of how the concept of Marianismo came to be, why it plays such a large role in Latin American culture , and how it has been shown to affect women who live there. After graduation, I also aspire to join the Peace Corps as a volunteer in Latin America, working with women's empowerment programming in health and education.

This summer, I will be working with an NGO that helps refugees from Syria through the Stage 1 and 2 processes of resettlement in Lesvos, Greece. I know very little as of now about the experience of refugees, but am passionate about the rights of women and children and hope that in editing the page of Refugee Women and Children, I could learn more to prepare for my journey.

For a previous course, I edited the page Health In Mozambique. Check it out! :)
