Marie C. Couvent Elementary is a historic epementary school in New Orleans, Louisiana named for Marie Couvent, an African American who deeded property for a school for orphans in her community (Institute Catholique). The Couvent Elementary School named in her honor was built in 1940in Faubourg Marigny was named in her honor. In 1989 Sun Ra performed in front of the school. In the 1990s a campaign was launched to rename city public schools that venerated slaveholders. Couvent and her husband owned slaves, so the school changed its name to A. P. Tureaud Elementary.
