Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki are in contention for the WTA no. 1 singles ranking at the start of the tournament. Halep will retain the top ranking if she reaches the final. Wozniacki must otherwise reach the final to have a chance of regaining the no. 1 ranking.[nb 1]

If Halep loses in the semifinals, she will have 8,290 points. If Halep reaches the final, she will have 8,550 points. Therefore, Halep can guarantee the number 1 ranking by reaching the final.
