Jung Ho-seok (Hangul: 제이홉; born February 18, 1994), better known by his stage name J-Hope is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and record producer. Managed under Big Hit Entertainment, he debuted as a member of the South Korean pop idol group BTS in 2013. In 2018, he released his first solo mixtape Hope World, which debuted at number 63 on the Billboard 200. [1]

Biography

J-Hope was born on February 18, 1994 in Gwangju, South Korea. [2] Prior to his debut with BTS, he was an underground street dancer in the dance team NEURON. [3] As a dancer, he won an underground dance battle and performed at an festival. [4]

Career

BTS

J-Hope was the third member brought into BTS,[5] training for multiple years alongside fellow BTS members Suga and RM. On June 13, 2013, J-Hope made his debut as a member of BTS on Mnet's M! Countdown with the track "No More Dream" from their debut single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. He has produced and written lyrics tracks on BTS' albums. J-Hope is credited with lyrics for 55 tracks on the Korea Music Copyright Association.[6]

J-Hope selected his stage name to be a reminder of a "hopeful existence" and added the J from his last name Jung.[7]

Solo work

J-Hope released his first solo mixtape, Hope World on March 2, 2018. Hope World debuted at number 63 on the Billboard 200, becoming the highest-charting K-pop solo act on the Billboard 200. [8][9]

J-Hope also had three tracks in the Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart, with "Daydream" at no.3, "Hope World" at No. 16, and "Hangsang" at No. 23.[10]

With the release of his mixtape Hope World, J-Hope made his debut on the Billboard Artist 100 Chart at No. 97, becoming the fifth K-pop act and second solo K-pop artist to appear on the chart. [11][12]
