Binley Woods is a village and civil parish in the Rugby borough of Warwickshire, England. The village lies inside the built-up area of Coventry but falls outside the formal city boundaries. In the 2011 census the parish had a population of 2,665.[1]
The village is located 5 miles (8 km) to the east of central Coventry, on the A428 road, next to the junction with the A46 road. The village of Brandon lies 1.5 miles (2.5 km) to the east.
History
Binley Woods is a relatively modern village. Settlement began in the 1920s, when some of the estates of Coombe Abbey were sold off and people began to settle and build homes in the area. In the early years, the village lacked modern amenities such as paved roads, piped water or mains drainage, though these were gradually provided from the late 1930s onwards. During the 1940s many homeless people from bombed-out Coventry lived in Binley, often living in shacks and caravans.[2][3]
The village adopted its current name of Binley Woods in 1961 after a vote by villagers, the name was chosen to avoid confusion with nearby Binley, a suburb south-east of Coventry. A village church was established in Binley Woods in 1987, which doubles as the village hall.[2]
As the name suggests, Binley Woods is close to some woods; Brandon Wood, next to the village, which was once run by the Forestry Commission, but since 2000 it has been owned and managed by a local group, the "Friends of Brandon Wood".[4]
Services
The village boasts one public house, The Roseycombe. There were formerly two garages/petrol filling stations, but in recent years one has closed completely and the other no longer sells fuel.
A small supermarket can be found on Rugby Road, and there is a row of shops in Woodlands Road, including a newsagent, butcher, hairdresser, chemist, Chinese takeaway and off-licence.
There is a village hall on Rugby Road.
It is now also home to Broadstreet RFC a National League Rugby club that moved to the village in 2001 after selling their ground in Binley, Coventry.
Appearances in media
One of Binley Woods' claims to fame is that it was used as one of the locations for the videotaping of the 1990s BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances; exterior shots of Hyacinth Bucket's house were filmed at at 117 Heather Road, and 119 Heather Road for her neighbours Elizabeth Warden and Emmet Hawksworth respectively.[5][6]
Notable residents
- Mark Pawsey, Member of Parliament for Rugby grew up in the village.
