    New article query

    Hi,

I would like to contribute by writing an Article about a company I worked in right now. May I be assisted on how to get started to write an article?

Thank you for the help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clara Jeaniver (talkcontribs) 02:04, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Clara Jeaniver Please read this guide to writing a new article. Please note also that if you still have any connection with this company, you have a "conflict of interest" and would be discouraged from writing such an article yourself: Noyster (talk), 09:27, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Translating a non-English language footnote: Xiaochang County

Hello! I would like to 1) ask about my footnote format at Xiaochang County. Basically what I do is find two or three sources that list the administrative divisions of a region in China, and then I add the pinyin and simplified Chinese characters for those administrative divisions to the region's page. Is my methodology kosher? Is the overall result in line with wikipedia standards? 2) Secondly, I recently discovered "|trans-title=" (giving you the option to translate the title of a non-English language work) and I was wondering- why is there no "|trans-quote="? How would I go about adding a "|trans-quote=" (quotation translation) or "|trans-publisher=" etc, etc to the wikipedia footnoting format? Thanks for any general or specific assistance. Geographyinitiative (talk) 04:27, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for asking, Geographyinitiative. This is just my view but there seems to be a lot of Chinese in this English-Wikipedia article. The references are lengthy with their strings of Chinese characters and numerals, and if these are likely to be significantly useful to readers I think the information could be incorporated in the article in the form of a table, with explanatory column headings in English. The references could then be a lot shorter and I would like to see Refs 1 & 2 giving an English name for the source and publisher.
Your suggestion to add trans-quote and trans-publisher parameters to the citation templates could be raised at Wikipedia talk:Citation templates: Noyster (talk), 10:02, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Simplified Chinese is not a language so |language=Simplified Chinese is a misuse of that parameter.
    |quote= should never have been made part of the cs1|2 templates. If quotation text from a source is important enough to be included in an article, the text should be placed within <blockquote>...</blockquote> markup in the article body and cited, or the text should be placed in its own end note ({{efn}}, for example) and cited. Either of these methods will allow you to include transcriptions in a neat and orderly fashion.
Further, language markup should use the {{lang}} template:
    {{lang|zh-Hant|孝昌縣}}孝昌縣
    {{lang|zh-Hans|孝昌县}}孝昌县
    {{lang|zh-Latn-pinyin|Xiàochāng Xiàn}}Xiàochāng Xiàn
The purpose of that markup is to help browsers and screen readers correctly render and speak the non-English text.

This is "the encyclopedia anyone can [= may] edit." If you're so concerned that certain articles are kept so completely up-to-date, why don't you learn to do it yourself instead of nagging other volunteers with less interest than you to do it for you? Kindly note that Wikipedia has no deadline and is not a news service. You haven't even courtesy-linked the appropriate article (I notice there is no article with the exact title you have used) as a clue for anyone who does want to help. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.218.14.51 (talk) 16:49, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You still haven't linked or named the article. Always do that for a page you want help with. The edit notice at top of the edit window asks for it. I guess it's 2017–18 NBA season but we really shouldn't have to search for it. The article doesn't contain the word standings so it doesn't show up in a search for 2017-18 NBA Standings. It gets the standings from Template:2017–18 NBA East standings. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:56, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Category alphabetizing--something gone wrong?

I recently created a category, and I'm in the process of populating it. And all of a sudden, it's alphabetizing things wrong.
The category is Elachista. I set it up as a new subcategory of another category, so now I'm moving articles. There will be close to 700 when it's finished; I've moved about 500 of them. And they're all getting Sortkeys, so the whole category won't be under one letter of the alphabet.
A couple of days ago, all of a sudden, the sorting went funny. Generally, entries I would move would start going to the end of their respective letters, instead of filing alphabetically among the entries already there. And in one case, G, the entry I moved started a whole new G section, apart from the G's that were already there, and coming right after H.
And I also found that when I try to page through the category, that works funny, too. I go to the last page, and it is missing quite a few entries at the beginning. Then when I page back, I see those missing pages (I think) on the earlier page--but going back to the first page does not get me to the beginning of the category. I have to leave the page and come back to it for that.
I've moved literally thousands of entries into other categories. And I've also rearranged thousands of existing categories by providing Sortkeys. So I'm sure I'm doing it right. And I've gone back and double checked; I've done it all the same way both before and after this glitch started. Does someone know what's going on? Uporządnicki (talk) 16:04, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@AzseicsoK: Software affecting category sorting is being updated. Sorting is expected to be wacky for around 8 days but be fixed automatically so just wait. See Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Update to ICU Unicode library - category order problems are expected and Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Category sorting. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:17, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, thank you. Maybe I'll wait a bit before doing those last couple of hundred. Uporządnicki (talk) 16:50, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@AzseicsoK: I meant don't worry and just wait for the problem to fix itself. You don't have to wait with category edits if you know what you are doing when you cannot see the correct sorting. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:59, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, yeah, but I think I'll wait anyway. It's an extended project, moving almost 700 articles. And I like to go back and check myself--see, at least, that as many pages as I've edited have in fact been added to that category page. (It's routine work, but nothing like forgetting a pipe--thus creating a dead link, which I might or might not notice as I'm flying through.) At the moment, one that I did recently just refuses to appear at all. Uporządnicki (talk) 01:07, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for help of Korean Speaker

It's been suggested at a recent AFD on an economics award that it might be helpful for someone to find Korean-language sources on the subject. In situations like these, is there some category tag that can be applied, or noticeboard to post to that would help find someone? Is such a process typically done for AFD debates? Thanks MarginalCost (talk) 17:18, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Sure MarginalCost, a process known as deletion sorting brings deletion discussions to the attention of relevant WikiProjects. Thus I have added the discussion you mention to the "list of Korea-related deletion discussions" as you will see in small print on the AFD page. As a result, soon it will pop up under "Article alerts" on the WikiProject Korea page. For added attention you could post to the talk page of that project. (Note that the South Korea project does not appear to be so active): Noyster (talk), 19:07, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I am aware of the deletion sorting process (though will admit to never having thought to add "Korea" in general as distinct from "South Korea"). I was just wondering if there was some mechanism for getting help from the language itself as distinct from the content area. I guess not. Thanks! (edit conflict) The sandbox is not ready for submission yet. Please read WP:Referencing for beginners and find some independent WP:Reliable sources to establish notability. It is also helpful to either expand your acronyms or link to appropriate articles. The article needs to be structured with a lead paragraph and maybe some subheadings. Coordinates not available on mobile

For example, if I go to Mystic, Colorado from the desktop view, I'm able to see and edit the coordinates. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystic,_Colorado. If I switch to mobile, they disappear from the article and the wiki code when I try to edit. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystic,_Colorado. I find in my case I'm more interested in the coordinates on mobile than I am on desktop. Just curious if there was a reason for hiding them? - Scarpy (talk) 22:20, 10 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Scarpy. Log onto the desktop site, go to your Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets; scroll down to #Testing_and_development and check the box for Add map popups to coordinates in the mobile website, press Save. The map symbol should appear on the top left side while mobile-browsing Wikipedia articles that have coordinate details. Hope this helps. Thanks, Lourdes 01:21, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What are the rules for uploading a screenshot (that you took) from a video game? The reason it would need to be added to an article is to show gameplay, but I'm not sure how that works since it's of someone else's work.

    Question

Where is a good place to go when there's a bold or possibly controversial edit you want to make to an article or template? I know there's RfC, but from what I know, that should only be used when editors have already have responded and you want a third opinion. Just a plain post on a talk page doesn't really work either, because with so many pages on Wikipedia, it's hard for Wikipedians to find every single request, and when I've done this previously, I've not gotten a response.--SkyGazer 512 talk / contributions / subpages 01:57, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

First I would be bold and make the edit and if reverted, then take to the talk page however if you aren't comfortable doing that, then I'd post to the articles talk page. There are normally people watching the pages that will comment but depending on how busy (watched) the page is, then it could take a few days. If the article is part of some sort of topic, you can also then link your comment on the talk page to that projects page asking for more thoughts. Lastly after that would probably be RfC. NZFC(talk) 02:23, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. Just in case it matters, the specific template is {{Uw-delete1}}. I think that the following sentence, "If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored" should be removed, because it makes it seem like all mistakes of reverting content removal are fixed, which is definitely not always the case. It may confuse the users into thinking that if their edit got reverted by mistake, it has definitely already been restored.--SkyGazer 512 talk / contributions / subpages 02:45, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thats a bit different, sorry thought you were talking about an article. I wouldn't make changes to templates without discussing first. Would discuss the change here Wikipedia talk:Twinkle as that is the page for the project. NZFC(talk) 02:48, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I can't really think of any reason why it would affect the use of the template on Twinkle. What do you think would be the best place to discuss making this change?--SkyGazer 512 talk / contributions / subpages 02:53, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
May want to take it too the Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit as probably use the template but it is also a template that Twinkle users use a lot and even has this note If you plan to make breaking changes to this template, move it, or nominate it for deletion, please notify Twinkle's users and maintainers at Wikipedia talk:Twinkle as a courtesy, as this template is used in the standard installation of Twinkle. Thank you! on the page you linked. NZFC(talk) 02:57, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I know that twinkle users use it a lot, but I wouldn't say it's a breaking change at all - it's just removing 1 non-important sentence. Anyways, I'll start by asking on the template's talk page, and then ask on other pages if necessary.--SkyGazer 512 talk / contributions / subpages 13:02, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not true. Full-length month names are not required (except to be consistent with other dates in the article); the issue with |date=Mar 20 2015 was that it was missing a required comma:
    {{Cite book |title=Title |date=Mar 20, 2015}}Title. Mar 20, 2015.

Hello there. If your issue is about what is written in the article Kifl Haris, you may take this up at Talk:Kifl Haris by opening up a new discussion. Do keep in mind that mostly, any material within an article needs to be sourced to reliable sources. So before you open a talk page discussion on the article's talk page, you could also check the source provided within the article (at the end of the statement you mention) and see whether it matches the claimed confiscation. Thanks, Lourdes 09:18, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

(edit clash) @François Robere: the problem seems to be that those refs are only called where they are nested inside other references, used for quotes. Hi,

With more than 100 cultural references in the movie Ready Player One, I thought this article would be quite interesting: Cultural_references_in_Ready_Player_One_(film), specially to help young readers to learn more about old pop culture. Is there any chance this article could be reactivated? Or at least a chance to have a vote on it? 2001:EE0:4041:7074:407F:1F60:E55F:91A6 (talk) 14:50, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not saying it can't come into existence, but I do question how many of the cultural references will really be noted by third-party sources in any significant manner, as discussed at WP:IPCV. I suspect if the article does leave Draft it's going to need eyes on it frequently. DonIago (talk) 15:27, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Ulster Scots language/dialects

I am shocked at your explanations for the perceived orgins of what is an utter bogus topic.if you properly researched this subject in Ireland you would realize that the picts/Scots were introduced to the Irish language through Irelands encroachment into Western Pictland/Scotland called Dal Riada, the whole basis of Scottish culture is derived from Ireland. This is not as relevant to the lowland Scots as it is to the rest of Scotland. The vast majority of Scottish people and planters are under the misapprehension that the Irish language spoken mainly in Western Scotland is their mother tongue, and that it is a different language unique to Scotland, how misinformed can you be. Their mother tongue is Pictish. The Irish spoken in Scotland today, allowing for small divergence over time is overwhelmingly Irish, with a smattering of old English, and Pictish. As for Dialects/languages in reference to Ulster Scots, this is an on going joke in Ireland. The claims made by those who wish to legitmise these patterns of speech as dialects are totally bogus. And utterly preposterous to suggest these accents could be considered a language. Where are you getting your information from ? It is certainly not Irish history, because it contradictory to everything that is written in the annals. So please remove these totally incorrect explanations on this subject, as it brings Wikipedia into disrepute. BTW, this is the second time I have had to bring to your attention shoddy research, on a subject. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.127.50.228 (talk) 19:51, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Date template

Is there a template that I can use to show the dates that an event will happen this year, next year, etc? It's a set day every year but the date changes. †dismas†|(talk) 22:40, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You are perhaps thinking of things like election day in the US which occurs first Tuesday after first Monday in November; start / end of daylight saving time (second Sunday in March / first Sunday in November – in the US, different elsewhere)? I don't know of such a template though, no doubt, one might hack something that would do the job. I imagine the template would take specific keywords plus year to identify the events for which dates are required: |event=dst start, etc.
There is {{Computus}} which will calculate the date of Easter ... maybe there are others.

That is what I'm asking. The example I have in my head is an event that is on the first Saturday of May every year. Which, naturally, is not always the same date every year. I'll check out that template. Thanks, †dismas†|(talk) 03:07, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Re-creating a deleted article - worthiness of inclusion?

I didn't create this page originally, but a link from another page led me to it: William Bolton (Royal Navy Officer) - which shows that it has been deleted, and I understand the reason (A7) (although without being able to see what was there originally, cannot comment on its justifiability).

Having done a fair bit of research on this man (partly but not exclusively because he's an ancestor), I believe that he is notable enough to warrant inclusion. If you have a look at his potted bio here: Wikisource Royal Naval Biography - Bolton, William, you will see that he was close to Lord Nelson both in blood and friendship/patronage; he was captain of 4 ships which have Wikipedia articles about them (and another with no article as yet and lieut. on another); he was knighted; there are several letters which passed between him and Nelson available online (during Mediterranean battles with the French, mainly); he married his first cousin who was niece of Nelson (and would have been in line for the Nelson earldom, with her twin sister, had they been male - instead it went to her younger brother; they married at the home of Nelson's long-term mistress, Emma Lady Hamilton, and witnessed by her eldest daughter; there was a coin minted with his likeness; there were several long obits written upon his death, etc.

I'm not a highly experienced editor and have yet to create an article from scratch, but think that I could cut my teeth on this one. I have edited and improved citations on articles here and there and do have some understanding of what is required. What do you think? Obviously I don't want to do a lot of work on an article which will be deleted! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Laterthanyouthink (talkcontribs) 08:58, 12 April 2018 (UTC) Oops. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 10:40, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Laterthanyouthink. As you won't be re-creating the article in the same form that got speedy-deleted, there is nothing to stop you. But please be sure you muster adequate published sources and not rely on Wikipedia articles or other wikis as references. As this is your first new article you may want to read Your first article and go through the Article wizard, which will guide you in making a draft for review at Articles for creation; the worst that can happen there is that the draft is declined with suggestions on how to improve it: Noyster (talk), 12:10, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • To clarify: do not cite the article at Wikisource. Instead, cite the work from which the Wiksource article was transcribed (the Royal Naval Biobraphy, 1823), and use the wikisource article as the "convenience link" in your citation. In my opinion, that's about as reliable as a source can get, so Bolton is notable. Others may disagree. If so you will need to add one or more additional reliable sources. Surely there are articles in the Naval Gazette or Gentlemen's Magazine, if you can find them, even if you cannot find him in more recent histories. -Arch dude (talk) 19:54, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your advice, Noyster and Arch dude. I do have several other sources (which I didn't make clear above, sorry - all that info isn't in the RNB bio!), and will take your advice about using the original RNB as a source rather than Wikisource. It'll take me a while yet to get it ready as I'm quite busy at the moment, but is it possible for someone (i.e. an experienced editor) to review it for me before I actually publish it? Hello,

I have created a page and in doing so have made two errors :

    1) I published it with the wrong title

    2) I published it on the French page but it is in English

I am searching for the "how to fix it page" but cannot locate it.

    Can someone perhaps help me?

Thank you, D Turner — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dickturner (talkcontribs) 09:13, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dickturner. A page cannot be moved between different language Wikipedias. I see you created fr:User:Dickturner/Brouillon. That is a sandbox (test page) for your own account. Wikipedia languages have different policies but I guess the French Wikipedia doesn't care that you write English in your sandbox as long as it's only there. I suggest you use Wikipedia:Articles for creation to make a draft at the English Wikipedia and submit if for review. You can manually copy the content from the page at the French Wikipedia. There is normally a requirement to attribute the source when you copy within Wikipedia but in this case you are the sole author and allowed to copy your own text. How to ask an Editor or a Wikipedia user to write an article for my company.

Good day! I'm interested to know about writing an article for my company "Go! Go! World". After researching about the guidelines, it seems that I have a "conflict of interests" according to Wikipedia guidelines. Our original inked was to write a non biased, no profit article, but since the fact that I work on the company clashes with the rules I was wondering if it is the type of thing I can ask someone to write for me. We can provide said editor or writer, if it can be done of course, with references, history, faqs, etc. Hope this is clear enough. Thanks for your time — Preceding unsigned comment added by GGNJose (talkcontribs) 02:21, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, your company doesn't seem to satisfy WP:COMPANY. I couldn't find any third-party articles, reviews, etc. Clarityfiend (talk) 02:33, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, GGNJose. Please understand that Wikipedia is not a directory or advertising site. It will never ever contain an article "for" your company (or "against" it). It might some day contain an article about your company, if there are enough independent reliably-published sources about it that an article can be based on (that is what we mean by notable in Wikipedia). If it does, you and your company will have no control whatever over the contents of the article. --ColinFine (talk) 08:22, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
GGNJose If, after reading the new notability guidelines, you still believe that your organisation is notable enough for a Wikipedia article (and that there is significant coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources), you could, if you wish, post a request at Wikipedia:Requested articles for the article to be created. Hi there, In the past, whenever I printed out a Wikipedia page, it would include the categories that the page belonged to - both when doing a print preview on the screen, and when the hard copy was printed out on a printer.
