2017 Unnao rape case
The Unnao rape case refers to the alleged rape of an 18 year old woman belongs to a Dalit community[1] on 4 June 2017 with the main accused being Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a BJP MLA from Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. The case is under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation in India. The case came to limelight in the national media in April 2018, when the rape survivor attempted self-immolation at the residence of Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on 8 April 2018, followed by the death of the father of the survivor shortly after being shifted to a district hospital from judicial custody.[2][3][4] The Unnao rape case and the Kathua rape case incident came into the limelight during the same time in the national discourse in India, resulting in coupled protests seeking justice for both victims at the same time.[5][6][7]
Incident
Complaint
On 4 June 2017, the survivor accused BJP MLA of raping her when she had gone to him looking for help to get a job. Subsequent attempts to file a case with the police were rejected repeatedly.[2][3]
On 5 April 2018, the father of the rape survivor was arrested and was in judicial custody until 9 April. On 9 April the father was shifted to a district hospital from the jail. Hours later, he died in the hospital. On 8 April 2018, the rape survivor attempted self-immolation at the residence of Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Only after these incidents as well as national pressure, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the BJP MLA and the case is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation. The case was shifted to the Allahabad High Court.[8][9][10]
Arrests
On 13 April 2018, accused BJP lawmaker Kuldeep Singh Senagar was taken in by the CBI for questioning.[11][12] Later in the day, on the basis of the questioning, he was arrested and new First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered and sent for a week in judicial custody.[13][14] A second arrest in the case was made on 14 April 2018 of the lady who allegedly took the survivor to the BJP MLA on the same day as the incident.[15]
