FaZe Clan is an American eSports organization that competes in Call of Duty, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Overwatch, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, FIFA and Fortnite Battle Royale tournaments. The team was founded as a gaming clan on YouTube by players known as FaZe Housecat (later renamed Timid), FaZe ClipZ, and FaZe Resistance[1] in the year 2010 who all created "trickshot" videos for the video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. These types of montages are still produced by various members. In 2012, with the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops II, the organization decided to expand into competitive play.
In 2016, a new era for FaZe began when the organization bought a Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) professional team[2]. This moment marked the beginning of FaZe Clan expanding into various esports. This movement is referred to as "FaZe 2.0"[3] by FaZe members and fans alike. The FaZe CS:GO team went on to become the 2nd most successful roster for the 2017 season.
YouTube
The Costal gaming began its existence through YouTube in 2010. FaZe started as a clan that would perform trick shots in Call of Duty and post clips and montages on YouTube. As the members' personalities and audience preferences changed, so did the video content. The FaZe YouTubers—including FaZe Banks, FaZe Apex, FaZe Blaze, FaZe Rug, FaZe Adapt, FaZe Censor, and FaZe Rain—started to vlog and do creative skits to further develop their channels. Although the FaZe YouTubers are the more famous FaZe Clan members, they do not compete in any competitive gaming for FaZe. These YouTubers strictly make YouTube videos in order to extend the FaZe Clan brand and entertain their fans. Currently, each major FaZe member has over 1 million subscribers on YouTube, with some having between three and five million subscribers. The official FaZe Clan YouTube channel has 4.8 million subscribers,[4] while FaZe Rug has the most subscribers out of all the FaZe Members with 8 million subscribers.[5]
Within the last few years, the Call Of Duty community has been frustrated with the way FaZe Clan has been/not been involved in the game in which it was founded. As of August 2017, Spratt has left FaZe Clan.[6] Following this, Carl has also left to join 'Red Reserve.'[7] FaZe Apex notes that both Spratt and Carl were on good terms with the clan and that Spratt has considered leaving for 'a while now'.[8] Carl said the reason he left FaZe Clan is because he still wanted to make Call of Duty videos, as most other FaZe members changed their video topics and mostly do vlog videos. This sparked FaZe Clan to organize the highly successful "FaZe Bootcamp" at the release of Call of Duty: WWII. Trickshotters known as FaZe Kitty, FaZe Dirty, FaZe Bloo, FaZe GwidT and FaZe Replays were brought in to all contribute to a week dedicated to creating Call of Duty content.

Call of Duty
History
The Beginning of FaZe
Their first roster—consisting of Heist, Folsom, Secretly, and Sham— was created to compete at the 2013 MLG Winter Championship. Their next roster—consisting of Heist, Methodz, Replays, and MBoZe—competed at the 2013 MLG Spring Championship, where they finished a respectable 5th place. Despite this, the roster got a complete reshuffle going into UMG Atlanta 2013, as only and Replays remained, with new members Slacked, Huhdle, and SpaceLy being added. This team struggled to gain any momentum, finishing in a very disappointing 9th place. Despite this poor placing, the team decided to stick with the same roster going into the MLG PAX Prime Invitational 2013. The team was able to make the semifinals of the 8 team invitational; however, they were ultimately eliminated by the eventual runners-up. To close out Black Ops 2, the team attended the 4 team MLG Fall Invitational 2013. Deciding to remain with the same roster, they were unable to break the slump as they finished in 4th place.
Call of Duty: Ghosts
With the launch of Ghosts they decided to replace Slacked with Classic, hoping to have a strong showing in the MLG Fall Championship 2013, but came 24th in the event. Following this result, the team decided to remove SpaceLy and Huhdle for JKap and Methodz. This swap was followed by a respectable showing in UMG Philadelphia 2014, where they placed 7th. However, when Call of Duty Championship 2014 was announced and revealed that all players had to be over 18 years old, they had no choice but to drop Methodz. FaZe picked up NameLeSs, but dropped him for ProoFy shortly after.
FaZe finished in the online qualifiers for the Call of Duty Championship 2014: US Regionals, where they last finished 4th, securing their spot at the Call of Duty Championship 2014. At the Championship, the team was upset by the Australian team Trident T1 Dotters in the group stage but were able to advance to bracket play with two big wins over SK Gaming and Aztek Gaming. They secured the 2nd seed in their group and set a match with the other Australian team, Team Immunity. They avoided another upset by defeating them 3-0 along with one of the top European teams, Epsilon eSports. They then won again to set up a match against the favorite team, compLexity, in which FaZe lost 1-3. Subsequently, the team lost their next match in the losers bracket against Strictly Business, 0-3. The team finished 6th place and walked away with $50,000. After the event, the organization decided to make some major roster adjustments. They announced that ProoFy would be starting his own team with the creation of FaZe Black. Theory would then fill his vacant spot on the team which would now be known as FaZe Red. To complete the FaZe Black roster, ProoFy was joined by 2 members of the previous team, Censor and Saints, along with FormaL. Unfortunately, ProoFy left the team for OpTic Gaming, and Dedo filled his spot.
With the rosters finally settled, the teams began practicing for UGC Niagara. Unfortunately, Saints wasn't attending the event, so FaZe Black was forced to find a replacement: Saint. FaZe Red ended 5-6th and FaZe Black 9-12th.
Roster troubles
Much later into the life cycle of Ghosts, FaZe saw yet another roster change; however, this change is a result of personal issues between Parasite and his teammates. Parasite subsequently got benched, but shortly after a very professional ordeal coming out of Censor, his actions were quickly undone as Dedo was traded to Evil Geniuses in exchange for a temporary loan of Karma, and Parasite returned to the active roster.[110]
Advanced Warfare
With the release of Advanced Warfare, Impact, Censor and Apathy were looking for two players. They recruited SlasheR and ACHES and attended MLG Columbus Open 2014. Matches were going well until ACHES severely cut his hand. He was still determined to play, but struggled and ended up causing the team to lose 0-3 to Prophecy. However, FaZe bounced back incredibly, beating both Denial Esports and Team Kaliber to face OpTic Gaming in the finals, where they beat them in two best of five series to win MLG Columbus and $10,000. FaZe later attended UMG Orlando 2015 where they placed poorly, 13-16th.
New squad and new success
As Advanced Warfare continued to move along, a deal was struck upon between FaZe and Denial Esports. FaZe reportedly found that Huke and Slasher were unsettled at FaZe and were seeking other teams. As a result, the organization and key members, ZooMaa and Enable, traded Huke and Slasher for Denial COD Champions James "Clayster" Eubanks and Dillon "Attach" Price.[111] The deal established FaZe as a top three team, and the new squad made strong showings in the Pro League, as well as multiple LAN wins, their first of which being the UMG Dallas 2015 event, where they beat OpTic 3-0.[112] Soon after, the squad traveled to Europe to try and win the Gfinity Summer Championship 2015. FaZe ran through the tournament with ease and were pitted, once again, against OpTic gaming in the finals. OpTic picked up a 3-0 lead in the best of seven; however, FaZe completed the near impossible yet again and made the 4-3 comeback to win the LAN event.[112][113] Doubts resurfaced about the FaZe team after a poor showing at UMG Washington DC 2015, but they didn't continue for long after they won MLG Pro League CoD AW Season 3 Playoffs.[114] At the MLG World Finals 2015, FaZe would finish pool play with a 4-0 record, placing them against Elevate, who they lost to 4-1, sending FaZe down to the losers bracket. Where they won the matches 3-2 and 3-1 respectively. FaZe then played against Denial eSports, where they would fall 3-1, placing 5th-6th at the event.
Black Ops 3
FaZe kept their roster and were invited to Totino's Invitational. FaZe lost 2-0 in the first round, eliminating them from the tournament with a 5th-8th finish. Unfortunately, this set a precedent for the rest of Black Ops 3 for FaZe. Next, they were invited to the Invitational CWL Stage 1 Qualifier. FaZe won both their matches against Happy Hour and compLexity Gaming, granting them a spot in the upcoming CWL Stage 1 NA Online League.
Mid-way through Stage 1, FaZe attended UMG South Carolina 2016, where they fell victim losing to a determined Team Liquid in the quarterfinals, giving FaZe another disappointing finish. FaZe completed Stage 1 with a 15-7 record, securing the #3 seed for the Stage 1 Playoffs. In the first round, they came up against compLexity yet again, sweeping them 4-0. However, FaZe’s victory was short lived, after their match up against a strong Rise Nation, where they lost 4-0, placing 3rd-4th. The FaZe Clan then travelled to Paris to compete at ESWC 2016. They finished the group stage with a flawless record. However, as they had experienced numerously already throughout the season, they fell short in the first round, losing 0-3 against a strong Splyce roster, placing 5th-8th.
At MLG Anaheim Open 2016, FaZe exited pool play with a disappointing 1-2 record, sending them to the losers bracket, where they began an almost legendary losers bracket run. First defeating Echo Fox3-1, then pulling off the reverse sweep against two of the best European teams at the time, Splyce and Team Infused. The outlook was positive for FaZe, but they lost 3-1 to Rise for a 4th place finish. FaZe completed Stage 2 with a 13-9 record, securing the third seed to face Dream Team at the Stage 2 Playoffs. However, FaZe yet again lost to Dream Team in Game 7, for another 5th-8th finish. At MLG Orlando Open 2016 FaZe finished pool play with another flawless 3-0 record. However, they were beaten into the losers bracket again, where they progressed until facing the in form Team EnVyUs, taking yet another 4th place finish.
2016 CWL Championship
The FaZe Clan qualified for the 2016 Call of Duty World League Championship - the biggest tournament ever played at that time. FaZe performed excellently in pool play, not dropping a single map going into the winners bracket. Their performances continued in bracket play, defeating Team Infused 3-0 in the first round. The team had high expectations going into Day 3, however they were sent into the losers bracket, again by eventual winners Team EnVyUs. FaZe came up against Millenium, and won the series 3-1, to set up a match against Splyce once more. The match went to an intense Game 5 Search and Destroy, which FaZe lost 6-2. FaZe finished the championship event in 7th-8th, netting them $50,000 in prize money.
Infinite Warfare
FaZe started the season well, winning the PlayStation Experience Invitational. At the first major event of the year, CWL Las Vegas 2017, the team beat OpTic and Splyce 3-1, to reach the semi-final against Rise Nation. FaZe lost the match 3-1, placing them in losers bracket. They defeated Allegiance 3-1, before ultimately falling 3-2 to Cloud9 in a close match, placing FaZe 3rd at the event. At CWL Atlanta, FaZe only managed to get a 5-6th finish. The team fared better at CWL Paris 2017, reaching the final. The match got off to a false start, with technical issues forcing a stop to the first Hardpoint, while FaZe were up 42-13. However after the restart, OpTic won the match with a convincing 3-0 scoreline, consigning FaZe to 2nd place.
A month later, FaZe attended CWL Dallas 2017, labelled as favourites to win. They performed to this expectation, facing off against OpTic Gaming in the Winners Final. But OpTic defeated FaZe with a 3-0 blowout. FaZe once again met eUnited, this time in the Loser’s Final, where they lost 3-1 to take home 3rd place.
The end of CWL Dallas marked the beginning of the Global Pro League. In Stage 1, FaZe were placed into Group Blue, alongside Fnatic, Rise Nation, and Evil Geniuses. Following a close series against Rise Nation, FaZe barely managed to qualify for Stage 1 Playoffs. Their first matchup was OpTic Gaming. FaZe managed to upset the OpTic, winning the series 3-1. FaZe continued their way through the bracket, however would place 3rd in Playoffs, losing to Splyce 3-1 in the Winners bracket and Luminosity 3-1 in the Losers bracket.

History
FaZe Clan comes to CS:GO
FaZe Clan first came into the scene with the acquisition of the roster of G2 Esports (Mikail "Maikelele" Bill, Håvard "rain" Nygaard, Ricardo "fox" Pacheco, Joakim "jkaem" Myrbostad, Philip "aizy" Aistrup).[115] The team's first tournament under FaZe would be at DreamHack Leipzig 2016, where they would start in Group A up against Luminosity Gaming in a best-of-one. Their first match of the tournament would go well for the Europeans, with a 16-9 victory. The next match for the team would be against Natus Vincere, who were the favorites of Group A. This match-up would not go as well for FaZe, as the team would be completely shut out and would end the match 9-16. After losing their previous match, the deciding factor between moving on and going home would lie within a rematch with Luminosity Gaming, this time in a best-of-three- The first map would go poorly for FaZe, bombing out 7-16 and 5-16. This would mark a 5-6th group stage finish and an earning of $3,000.[116]
A CS Legend turned coach
On February 9th, 2016, FaZe Clan added Robert "RobbaN" Dahlström as a coach. Formerly, he was widely regard as one of the best in Counter-Strike, where he and his team placed highly in many events. With more experience on FaZe's side, the first tournament that was to be attended with this new coach would be the Intel Extreme Masters X - World Championship, which gave the team a month of preparation.
The first match of Group B would be against E-Frag.net Esports Club, whom they took down 16-5 in a best-of-one. The next match for FaZe would be against Tempo Storm. This match-up would prove to be quite a struggle, where the match would be taken into overtime after a 10-5 deficit for FaZe. However, the Norwegian duo would help pull in the win for FaZe, ending the match with a score of 19-16. The next match-up would mark the third match of the day for and they would be going against Team EnVyUs, which were in a slump at the time. Despite this, FaZe would be taken down by the opposing French side 12-16, which would be their first loss in the group. The next match would be against Astralis. FaZe would continue their losing spree here as well, being easily taken down by Astralis, ending the battle 5-1. The final match-up of the group would decide whether FaZe Clan or Virtus.pro, who like were also considered to be in a slump at the time, would be going home. The final match would prove to be a close game, with the first half ending 8-7. However, FaZe continued to slip and would lose the match 13-16, marking an earning of $7,000 as well as another group stage exit for the team.[117]
The MLG Columbus Major
Going into the first major of 2016, MLG Major Championship: Columbus, FaZe would play their first match of Group B against Team Liquid. The match-up would not start well, ending the first half with a 3-12 scoreline. Though they would later gain 8 more rounds, they would eventually fall into the lower bracket, being defeated with an 11-16 score. In the lower bracket, the Europeans would be going up against Splyce. The match went well for FaZe and they manage to win 16-3 on Inferno with aizy top-fragging with an impressive HLTV rating of 1.83. In the loser final FaZe would be against Fnatic in a best-of-three. The first map was Mirage and Fnatic took the first half ending 10-5 and eventaully win 16-10. On the next map, Cobblestone, Fnatic was still dominant and won the first half with 10-5. Faze never got a got a chance to come back and lost the second map 16-6 and they were out of the tournament.[118]
After the major captain Mikail "Maikelele" Bill was replaced by Fabien "kioShiMa" Fiey.[119]
A French change
After Maikelele stepped down FaZe started to search for a replacement and only three days before DreamHack Masters Malmö FaZe acquired the French player Fabien "kioShiMa" Fiey from Team EnVyUs.[119]
At DreamHack Masters Malmö they would start in Group D with teams Virtus.pro, Tempo Storm, and Team EnVyUs. FaZe would play their first match against Virtus.pro. FaZe lost the first match 16-8 on Train and were heading to a match with Team EnVyUs. The match was very close on Cache and FaZe managed to win the first half 9-6, but in the second half FaZe started to struggle and Team EnVyUs managed to win the match 12-16, marking an earning of $2,000 as well as another group stage exit for the team.[120]
A Bosnian beast joins
After aizy's departure to North, FaZe were able to strengthen their team even more by buying out one of the biggest stars in CS:GO—Nikola "NiKo" Kovač from mousesports. The implementation of the Bosnian star proved to be successful, as FaZe were able to reach the finals of IEM Katowice 2017[121] and win the StarSeries Season 3 finals.[122]
Signing Stars
Despite having a consistent streak of top placings following StarSeries at IEM Sydney,[123] ECS Season 3 Finals[124] and ESL One: Cologne 2017,[125] FaZe bombed out of 2017's 2nd Major, PGL Major Kraków 2017, in 15th-16th place without winning a single game.[126] Following the team's stunning elimination at the Major, the team bought out the contract of Ladislav "GuardiaN" Kovács from Natus Vincere to replace Aleksi "allu" Jalli as their new AWPer.[127] Also following the major, kioShiMa was replaced by the 2015 world number one, Olof "olofmeister" Kajbjer.[128]

Notes
- ^ Olofmeister went inactive due to personal problems outside of the game.
- ^ Premier Tournaments offer an outstanding prize pool, are almost exclusively played offline, and feature the best teams from all over the world. They are commonly held by well-established organizers and are considered especially prestigious amongst the community. Major Tournaments feature a large prize pool and a good number of top-tier teams. They are events which take place offline, online or online with an offline playoff. (Not Valve sponsored Majors) Minor Tournaments offer a smaller prize pool and less prestige than Major Tournaments but still draw a high level of competition.
