The Perth Children's Hospital is a children's hospital under development in Nedlands, Western Australia. The hospital is located at the corner of Winthrop Avenue and Monash Avenue, within the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre site (which also contains Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital).[1]
History
In 2008, the state government announced that a new children's hospital would be built to replace Princess Margaret Hospital for Children.[2]
In January 2012, Premier Colin Barnett and Minister for Health Dr Kim Hames held a sod-turning ceremony to mark the beginning of the construction.[2]
On 30 September 2013, Premier Colin Barnett announced that the new hospital would use the original 1909 name, Perth Children's Hospital. This name was chosen as part of efforts to "[promote] Perth as a major centre for medical health and medical research".[3] The new hospital will have 298 beds.[4]
As of 2 December 2017, the hospital was not open, due to structural and medical problems with the building that had delayed the hospital's opening multiple times. On 29 November 2017, Western Australian Health Minister Roger Cook said that the hospital will open by May 2018, two and a half years after it was originally slated to open.[5]
As of April 2018[update] the hospital is scheduled to open in May 2018.[6]
