India does not have many skyscrapers due to a low Floor space index. Most of the high rise buildings are in the commercial capital Mumbai, where space is a premium. Having skyscrapers puts a huge strain on existing infrastructure. Water, parking, fire fighting and earthquake damage are all some of the ills of skyscrapers and permission to construct such is usually denied. A building above 24 metres is classified as a high-rise. Here is the list of tallest buildings in India.

Future of skyscrapers in India

The tallest buildings currently under construction in India are The Imperial towers in Mumbai. They are set to be 252m [1] each, with a total of 60 floors.

In addition, Mumbai is currently planning to build India's first supertall tower on former textile mill land [2]. The tower is expected to feature 72 floors and reach a height of 1,050 ft.

Also in Mumbai, Oberoi is planning to construct a 90-storey residential structure in Worli [3], which, if built, will likely be the tallest all-residential structure in all of Asia-Pacific. The project is known as Oberoi Skyz.

Another of the highest residential complexes in the South Asia is coming up in south city [4] Calcutta with 4 residential 36-story skyscrapers under construction

Hyderabad proposed an 80-storey commercial tower [5] in its new business district, but it was later changed to 60-storey twin towers [6], before finally being finalized as 20-storey twins [7]. Land has reportedly already been acquired. In addition, a mega project consisting of a single 90-storey tower, sixteen 30 storey towers, and a mall has been announced.

The chimney of Tata Power Corporation's coal-fired thermal power plant in Mumbai, is Asia's tallest at 275 metres.
