2017: Produce 101 Season 2

Four members (JR, Baekho, Minhyun, and Ren) participated in the reality television series Produce 101 Season 2 in the first half of 2017.[1] During their appearance on the show, previously released albums, including Q Is and Canvas, rose on South Korean album charts as a result of a surge in popularity.[2][3] NU'EST's previous releases shot back up the music charts after the final episode of Produce 101 Season 2 was broadcast, topping the Gaon Chart.[4] The group's single "Hello" which was first released in 2013, ranked #11 on Inkigayo.[5]

Produce 101 Season 2 concluded in June 2017 with Minhyun ranking 9th and becoming a member of the temporary group Wanna One comprised of the Top 11 contestants from the show, while Baekho, JR, and Ren ranked 13th, 14th, and 20th respectively. Due to the nature of Wanna One's contract with CJ E&M, it was expected that Minhyun would promote as a Wanna One member from June 2017 to December 2018 before returning to NU'EST.[6][7] It was announced in July 2017 that the other NU'EST members (JR, Aron, Baekho, and Ren) would promote as a temporary sub-unit titled NU'EST W in Minhyun's absence. (see NUESTW)

The individual members also undertook a number of solo activities: JR and Ren became models for the cosmetics company Labiotte;[8] JR became a fixed cast member on the JTBC variety show Night Goblin and a judge on the tvN music show Shadow Singer;[9][10] Ren also joined the first season of the JTBC variety show Learning the Hard Way, as a fixed cast member;[11] and Aron featured on Raina's single "Loop".[12]
