This was the first race run at 15km after being held at 18km from 1924 to 1952. Kolchin was the first non-Scandinavian to earn an Olympic medal.

The competition took place at "Trampolina Italia" with a K-Point of 72m. [1]. Athletes from East and West Germany competed together as the "United Team of Germany", designated as the EUA this combined team appeared in the 1956, 1960 and the 1964 Winter Olympics.
