Matthijs de Ligt (Dutch pronunciation: [də ˈlɪxt]; born 12 August 1999) is a Dutch professional football player who plays for AFC Ajax as a centre-back.[2]

Club career

De Ligt is a youth player for AFC Ajax, having joined the academy when he was 9 years old. He made his professional debut for Jong Ajax on 8 August 2016 in a Eerste Divisie game against FC Emmen, playing the full game.[3] On 21 September, De Ligt made his debut for Ajax's senior team in a cup game against Willem II. De Ligt scored after 25 minutes from a corner, making him the 2nd youngest goalscorer ever behind Clarence Seedorf. Ajax won the game 5–0.[4] On 24 October 2016, Ajax announced through Twitter that De Ligt had been promoted to the senior squad.[5]

International career

On 25 March 2017, despite having started in only two league games for AFC Ajax, De Ligt made his debut for the Netherlands national football team in a 2–0 defeat to Bulgaria in a World Cup qualifying match, becoming the youngest Holland debutant since Mauk Weber in 1931. He was substituted for Wesley Hoedt in the 45th minute after blunder. Despite this bad appearance, de Ligt recovered and played two fantastic matches in March against Portugal (3-0 for the Netherlands from what two assists of Matthijs) and a lost match against England.
