GOM Player is a media player for Windows. One of its strengths is the ability to play most media files without the need to obtain a codec. It can also play some broken files which other player such as Windows Media Player can't. Created by Gretech Corporation of South Korea. Gretech was purchased by CJ (Cheil Jedang), one of the major Korean chaebol.

GOM TV

GOM TV is the most popular streaming service in South Korea, and as the most attractive feature in GOM Player, it is chiefly responsible for GOM Player's overwhelming popularity in South Korea. The GOM TV service offers users various video contents ranging from National Geographic documentaries and television dramas, to major motion pictures and adult videos.

The service mixes both ad supported and pay-per-view content. Prices range from 500 won on up, with most movies available for 2,000 won. (1,000 won is very roughly about 1 US dollar.)

Korean vs. English Versions

While functionality is substantially similar in the English and Korean versions of GOM Player, GOM TV is left out of the English version, effectively removing the player's primary attraction.

Popularity in South Korea

In July, 2006, Gretech announced that more users use GOM Player than any other media player including Microsoft's Windows Media Player. Korean Click verified that GOM Player has 29.8% of the market share whereas Windows Media Player has 26.7%. Korean Click statistics include audio, video, and web services. Some other players in Korean Click's statistics include Adrenalin, ALShow, ALSong, Bugs Music, Melon, and Winamp, as well as services provided by the major South Korean broadcast networks, KBS, MBC, and SBS.

Inside of the Korean video player market, GOM Player has well over 50% market share due to the popularity of GOM TV.

Other Korean video players include Adrenalin, ALShow, and The KMPlayer.
