He took up the study of law, but soon switched to the Academy of Performing Arts in the Dutch town of Utrecht, where he graduated in 1996.

He became known in the Netherlands through his role in the TV series Rozengeur & Wodka Lime (2001-2005). Atsma has received both a Golden Calf (award) and a Rembrandt Award.

Internationally, he appeared in the 2014 film production Hector and the Search for Happiness and the 2018 British television series The Split.
