Khoirabari massacre (Bengali: খয়রাবাড়ি গণহত্যাকাণ্ড) refers to the massacre of Bengali Hindu refugee settlers from East Pakistan in Khoirabari in Darrang district (now Udalguri) in the Indian state of Assam. More than hundred Bengali Hindus were killed in the massacre. Before attached on Bengali Hindus, Bengali muslims were also attacked by Assamese people. The news of the massacre was reported after several days as the attackers had destroyed all communication sistem.
Background
After Independence and partition of india in 1947, bengali Hindu people took shelter in different Indian states, like West Bengal, Assam, Tripura Jharkhand, Madhya pradesh etc. Here in a cluster of villages lived a couple of hundred Bengali Hindus, who had been settled here in the lands vacated by Bengali Muslims, who had gone to East Pakistan in 1947. But for years the Assamese Hindu villages around them had been resentfully looking at them.
Genocide
On February 7, 1983, Assamese mobs attacked Chawalkhowa chapori on immigrant Muslims. Due to this communication system was totally disrupted in Mangaldoi. Khoirabari was a bengali hindu dominated village in North of Mangaldoi. After cut off the communications to Khoirabari, the Assamese of the neighbouring villages surrounded Khoirabari village and planed to attack on Bengali Hindus of Khoirabari. On 7 February night Assamese people attacked at night. More than a hundred Bengali Hindus were killed. The rest took shelter in the Khoirabari railway station.
The first phase of polling held on the February 7 in Mangaldoi subdivision and in other parts of Assam was complete farce.
Criticize
Some of politicians district Muslim ‘infiltrators’ and Hindu ‘refugees’ from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). They are brutally criticize the attack on bengali hindu by assamese mobs. BJP and RSS were also criticized for not solving this issue after three decades even BJP and RSS are still unable to rid themselves of the same unworkable, wishful nuance in Assam. Although newspaper reported that PM of india said to take responsibility of Bengali hindu refugees from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh must be protected the entire country should share that responsibility. Although it will still not work. Over so many decades, the BJP is unable to crack the intellectual myth that religion is the main determinant of identity in India’s most diverse state.
