Christian Friedrich Johannes Büttner (born 1 June 1979), known as TheFatRat, is a German record producer and musician. His genre is often described as "glitch-hop".[1] He is best known for his 2014 song "Unity," which has more than 100 million views on YouTube,[2] and his 2016 Jackpot EP which reached #23 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart.[3] His YouTube channel has over 2.8 million subscribers and over 573 million views.[4]

Music career

Büttner began producing music in 2001 under his real name. He began by making background music for television, radio and advertisements and produced music for DJs.

In July 2011, he began making solo music under the pseudonym "TheFatRat" with the release of his first EP, Do Be Do Be Do.

Büttner's music is popular within YouTube, and has been used in over 1.5 million YouTube videos.[5] Some of his music has been accompanied by vocalist Laura Brehm.[6]

His single "Unity" was included on the album Sounds of Syndication Vol. 1[7] curated by Tom Cassell, one of the most subscribed streamers on Twitch.tv.[8]

In November 2016, Büttner released his second EP, Jackpot on the Universal Music label.[5] The EP reached #23 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart.[3] In December 2016, Büttner started a record label, The Arcadium, in collaboration with Universal Music.[9]

In June 2017, he released the single "Fly Away" featuring vocalist Anjulie.[10] In July, he performed at the Electric Forest Festival.[11] In October 2017, he released the single "Oblivion" featuring vocalist Lola Blanc.[12]

In July 2018 he released his debut album ‘’Warrior Songs,’’ a concept album inspired by the video game ‘’Dota 2’’.

He is currently signed onto Casablanca Records, which is owned by Universal Music Group.
