Grubville, Missouri
Grubville is an unincorporated community in western Jefferson County, Missouri, United States.[1] It is included in the Saint Louis metro area. It is located near the Jefferson/Franklin County line about a mile south of Route 30. The area code is 636 and zip code is 63041.
A post office called Grubville has been in operation since 1853.[2] The community was named after the occupation of a local "grubber" (i.e. post hole digger).[3]
The unincorporated town of Grubville, Mo., is without any manufacturing operations, but the rural burg’s residents are known for their love of horses in this agricultural region not far from St. Louis. The Jefferson County Trail Riders Club sponsors horse shows there each month from May through September at the Big River Saddle Club Park, which is owned by the Jefferson County Parks Department. The family-oriented events draw an average of 100 to 150 horses and riders each month. Participants range in age from youngsters to senior citizens.
Also of interest to many of the area residents is a recently published western novel, Terror Near Town, which is authored by James R. Wilder. The novel tells the story of Chet Harbison, one of Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, who returns to his family farm in Grubville at the end of the Spanish American War.
Wilder, who spent much of his youth in the area, held a book signing at the Big River Saddle Club Park during a horse show in the spring of 2018. The novel is available through Amazon and a sequel is in the works.
