Prisons in Albania
Like in other countries, prisoners in Albania are separated into remanded prisoners (in pre-trial detention) and convicted prisoners (whose sentences are being executed). The basic three types of prisons are closed, semi-open, and open prisons. A difference is made between ordinary closed prisons and high security prisons. Many prisons have separate blocks (wings) for women and children (juveniles), while others keep women and children together.[1] Prisoners themselves are allowed to elect a council of reeducation, which is used to enforce laws[2]
