Bamrauli Airport (IATA: IXD, ICAO: VEAB) is a military airbase and public airport serving the city of Allahabad, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is located in Bamrauli at a distance of 12 km (7.5 mi) from Allahabad city and is operational for domestic flights. Nearest international airports are Lucknow and Varanasi. It is one of the oldest airports in India.

History

Although the first official mail flight took off from Allahabad, that particular flight originated in a polo field.[1] Construction of dedicated airfields were taken up much later, in 1926.[2] The airfield at Bamrauli was one of the five compulsory stops of the MacRobertson Trophy Air Race which took place in October 1934.[3]

Structure

Allahabad airport's area is 1 acre, the terminal's capacity being 120, for both arrival and departure. It is a civil enclave managed by Airports Authority of India, under the control of Civil Aviation Training College in Bamrauli, Allahabad. The adjoining concrete apron measures 500 by 150 metres, and has 2 parking bays to cater to 2 ATR 72-600 aircraft simultaneously being maintained by Indian Air Force. Allahabad's runway is oriented 12/30, is 8400 feet long and 150 feet wide. The airfield has an Instrument landing system facility (ILS) and PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) provided by Indian Air Force and also DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) installed by Airport Authority of India.[4]

Extension and upgradation plan

To meet the demand of increasing air travel in Allahabad, Allahabad Airport is being upgraded and a new civil terminal is being built by Airports Authority of India, adjacent to the existing Central Air Command Air force base, Allahabad. The work will be completed before the city hosts Ardh Kumbh Mela in January 2019. This is by far the tightest deadline to be accepted by the Authority; the construction is to be completed within 16 months.[9] The site measures approximately 82.66 acres located south of the present airfield civil enclave. The new civil enclave will include a new terminal building (9000 square metres) with peak hour capacity of 700 passengers, an apron to park civil schedule flights, link taxi track and car parks with capacity of 200 cars/taxis.[10] The cost of construction of the new civil terminal airport is Rs. 1.27 Billion.[11]
