The Queen Elizabeth Hospital is based in Sheriff Hill in Gateshead, England. It is managed by Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust.
History
The hospital has its origins in the Sheriff Hill Isolation Hospital opened in 1880.[1] After the Second World War the hospital was substantially extended with the new buildings being officially opened by the Queen Mother on 18 March 1948.[2][3] An out-patients department, an accident and emergency department, a new operating theatre and a medical records department were added in 1967.[3]
A new Pathology "Centre for Excellence" for patients from Gateshead, Sunderland & South Tyneside and funded from a £12m grant from the government, opened in early 2014.[4] A new £32 million Emergency Care Centre opened in February 2015.[5]
