While the notion of the “knowledge economy” was not widely adopted until the years around 2000, some historians have argued that such economies have actually been in existence for at least two centuries. This seminar critically evaluates this claim by examining the significance of scientific and technological knowledge and know how in the agricultural, manufacturing, and service sectors from the decades around 1800 up to the present. We will also explore how money considerations and patronage relationships have shaped (and continue to shape) the development of the sciences in both obvious and more subtle ways.
