ATEN International Co., Ltd (Chinese: 宏正自動科技; pinyin: Hóngzhèng Zìdòng Kējì) is a Taiwanese multinational manufacturer of connectivity and access management hardware headquartered in Xizhi District, New Taipei, Taiwan. Its products include KVM switches, audiovisual switches and matrices, intelligent power distribution units, information technology management systems, and interface adapters.[2] ATEN has subsidiaries in several countries and is the parent company of IOGEAR. The company is currently the largest KVM switch manufacturer in the world.[3]

History

Founded in 1979, ATEN’s first products became available in 1981.[4] In 1999, ATEN became a public company and established IOGEAR, a US-based subsidiary with a focus on consumer electronics and information technology, for improved localization in the region.[4][5] The following year, ATEN developed the first 4–port USB 2.0 hub, received the world's first USB 2.0 hub certification, and thus became a USB testing standard for the USB Implementers Forum, Inc.[6] ATEN went public in 2003 and has since remained the only listed KVM manufacturer in the world.[7] In 2006, ATEN was named one ‘One of Asia's Best 200 under a Billion’ companies by Forbes.[8] 2010 and 2012 saw ATEN diversify their offerings by inaugurating professional-grade audiovisual (VanCryst) and green energy (NRGence) lines, respectively.[9][10] In 2012, ATEN collaborated with National Taiwan University of Science and Technology to develop "iListen", software aimed at helping the hearing-impaired. This collaboration won both the Red Dot Communication Design Award and the Samsung Apps Contest championship that year.[11] The following year, ATEN joined the HDBaseT Alliance and began developing video extenders and matrices featuring HDBaseT technology.[12] In 2014, QYResearch, a Chinese market research agency, reported that 55.8% (1,076,530) of global KVM switches sales (1,930,119) were shipped by ATEN.[13] ATEN would win another Red Dot Award in 2015 for its Video Matrix Series GUI.[14]

Operations

ATEN has subsidiaries in the United States (established in 1996), Belgium (2000), Japan (2004), the United Kingdom (2006), South Korea (2007), China (2007), and Australia (2015); a representative office in Russia (2013); factories in Taiwan and China (2008); and R&D centers in Taiwan, China, and Canada (1998).[15][16]

Products

ATEN products use proprietary Application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) technology, incorporate over 220 patents, and are ISO 9001:2008 UKAS, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE-2002/96/EC), and Restrictions on Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS-2002/95/EC) certified.[17][18] As of July 2015, ATEN holds 466 approved global patents.[19]
