Shim Jae-chul
Shim Jae-chul (Template:Lang-ko, born 18 January 1958) is a journalist and politician of South Korea, who was the First Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly. He is also one of the centrist, conservative politicians born at Honam, quite rare and respected among many politicians for his non-radical political spectrum.
Early Life
Born in Gwangju, he was the school president of the nation's top tier university (Seoul National University). Moreover, he was one of the head student activists during the phase of Gwangju Uprising in 1980. After his retaliating years against dictatorship, he became a highschool English teacher. Moreover, he later worked as a journalist of [[Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation |MBC]] from the late 1980s to the early 1990s.
Entrance to Politics
He officially entered to New Korea Party, by the recommendation from the former president Kim Young-sam, in 1996. Albeit his loss in his first election, Shim won 5 elections consecutively in one of the most competitive election districts (Ahnyang). Making him one of the few experienced senators of Korea. In 2016, he was elected as the First Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, along with Park Joo-sun as the Second.[1]
Controversy
Unintended Government Information Breach
The Ministry of Strategy and Finance has accused Shim Jae-chul, a member of parliament's office, to be prosecuted. It is viewed as the ruling party's oppression to limit the opposition party's (Liberty Korea Party) legitimate activities by the presidential office (The Blue House). The Ministry of Strategy and Finance falsely claims that their information system was hacked by the congressional staff; in order to gain access of the information with the intentions of " unauthorized disclosure ".
However, the financial information system can be accessed by receiving approval from the Ministry of Finance. In other words, the information system was legitimately accessible for the congressional staff. Moreover, the undisclosed information was accidentally breached by one of the staff members by pressing the 'backspace' button when the staff was about to refresh the screen. The essence of this information leak incident is that the opposition lawmakers are taking responsibility for the government's failure to secure information breach. It is being proven by the lawmakers and the media that the Korean government, as well as the ruling party (Democratic Party) is only trying to conceal cronynomic mischief.
Good Intentions Gone Spiral
He was formerly regarded as criminal for his uprising against dictatorship(known as the 5th Republic) during the early 1980s. Originally, he was a student activist against Chun Doo-hwan, but he declared to disorganize the protest for the safety of the student activists.[2] This decision was automatically led to a massacre.[2]
Sewol
Just after a year, he was involved into a controversy when he sent a Kakao Talk message that the parents of the dead students are taking advantage of the matter itself. To this day it is an ongoing debate. Sewol sinking.[3]
Rebellion Issues
On 28 November 2017, he declared that he will report the president Moon Jae-in along with his secretaries as "rebellion".[4] This was criticised by left-wings, and pro-socialists.[5]
