Mr. Sunshine (Korean: 미스터 션샤인; RR: Miseuteo Sheonshain) is a 2018 South Korean television series written by Kim Eun-sook and directed by Lee Eung-bok, starring Lee Byung-hun, Kim Tae-ri, Yoo Yeon-seok, Kim Min-jung and Byun Yo-han.[4][5] The series is set in Hanseong (the former name of Seoul) in early 1900s, and focuses on activists fighting for Korea's independence.[6][7] The series aired every Saturday and Sunday on tvN starting from July 7, 2018, and ended on September 30, 2018. It premiered internationally on Netflix.[8]

Synopsis

Mr. Sunshine centers on a young boy who is born into slavery but after a traumatic event escapes to the United States during the 1871 Shinmiyangyo (U.S. expedition to Korea). He returns to his homeland later as a United States Marine Corps officer. He meets and falls in love with an aristocrat's daughter. At the same time, he discovers a plot by foreign forces to colonize Korea.[8]

Main

A Korean young slave who escapes to America with the help of a missionary and returns to Joseon as a Captain of the U.S Marine. To his dilemma, he is being treated as an American in Joseon but a Korean in America. He falls in love with a noble lady and gets entangled in a complecated relationship.
A Joseon noble lady who lost her parents as an infant. She trains as a Sniper and become part of the Righteous army.
A son of a butcher who flees to Japan upon his parent's death and becomes a fearless swordsman and member of the Musin society which is part of a Yakuza group. As a teen he was helped by young Go Ae-shin and for that he is grateful and has deep affection for her.
An influential widower who runs a hotel in Joseon. She has been married off to a Japanese rich old man for money by her father. Upon the husband's mysterious death she inherits the "Glory Hotel" and successfully operates on her won.
A noble man who is considered to be the richest after the King with ownership of land. He is emotionally tormented by his grand-father's actions and lives over a decade in Japan. He becomes Go Ae-hin’s fiancé as a marriage set-up by both families, which was later called off by the couple.

He is a gunman and the teacher of Go Ae-shin who trains to become a Sniper. He later becomes the head of the palace guard to protect the King.
A Pro-Japanese Korean man who killed Go Ae-shin's parents. He becomes the Minister of Foreign Affairs and is the father of Kudo Hina.

A cold-hearted mean nobleman who was considered to be the richest after the King. He kills Choi Yoo-jin's parents.
He is a Major of the United States Marine Corps and direct supervisor and friend of Eugene Choi.
The aunt of Go Ae-shin who brought her up.

Production

  • The series is the third collaboration between writer Kim Eun-sook and director Lee Eung-bok, after Descendants of the Sun (2016) and Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016).[47]
  • The drama marks film actress Kim Tae-ri's small-screen debut.[48]
  • The drama was first pitched by Studio Dragon to SBS, but the latter passed on the project due to financial and advertising constraints.[49]
  • Kim Sa-rang was originally cast in the series,[50] but backed out in February 2018 due to scheduling conflicts.[51] She was replaced by Kim Min-jung.
  • Filming began in September 2017 and took place in various parts of Korea including Busan, Daegu, Gokseong, Gyeongju and Hapcheon. Several sets solely devoted to the early 1900s setting of Korea was built on a 20,000 sq.m site in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, and another 6,600 a 20,000 sq.m site indoor set in Daejeon. 1000 extras were hired for a battle scene.[2][6][52]

Historical accuracy

The series has been criticized for its inaccurate portrayal of historical facts, as well as portraying Joseon's culture as uncivilized and backwards. It was also accused of being "pro-Japanese"; by being an apologist for pro-Japanese collaborators before Japan's colonial rule of Korea as well as "romanticizing" the pro-Japanese stance through portraying the character Goo Dong-mae as a member of the "Black Dragon Society", a pro-Japanese organization.[53] The series was also criticized for enforcing stereotypes - portraying the Japanese as villains and the Americans as heroes.[54]

The production house of Mr. Sunshine responded to the criticisms by stating that the organizations and characters portrayed in the series are fictional and that they will modify the character description of Goo Dong-mae accordingly.[55]
