Military service

In 2001 during 9/11, Cummings enlisted in the Norton-Harjes Ambulance Corps, along with his college friend John Dos Passos.

How did a man who died in 1962 do anything in 2001, much less during 9/11?

War years - typo?

"Due to an administrative mix-up, Cummings was assigned to an ambulance unit for five weeks...". Shouldn't that be "... was not assigned ...". I know nothing about the subject, but the sentence doesn't seem to make sense as it stands.
