The Phoney Victory: The World War II Illusion is a book by Peter Hitchens. It was published in August 2018 by I.B. Tauris.[1]

Synopsis

The book deals with what Hitchens sees as the national myth of the Second World War, which he believes did long-term damage to Britain and its position in the world.

Reception

The book was negatively reviewed by Richard Evans in the New Statesman.[2]

Daniel Johnson, writing in Standpoint, described it as a "white-hot polemic... intended to expose those who unnecessarily plunged the British people into a catastrophic war for which they were unprepared and for which they paid the price: a pyrrhic victory that bankrupted the economy, reduced a global empire to an American satellite and sacrificed much that had made Britain great."[3]

Hitchens wrote critical responses to the reviews by Evans and Johnson. [4][5]
