Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 211.24.109.210 (talk) at 18:33, 15 November 2018 (Prisoner (TV series)). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

Current requests for increase in protection level

Full protection extension: The formerly given full protection of the page expires today and multiple issues have not been resolved that are directly related to the content dispute on the page. User Ryanoo may get a boomberang TBAN as you can see on the ANI page under “User Arboleh” and Ryanoo opened an SPI on me that hasn’t yet come to any conclusion. Given the presence of sensitivities, content disputes may occur again only complicating the many processes that are currently underway. Itaren (talk) 21:05, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Nothing yet, but ping @Oshwah: ~ Amory (utc) 15:46, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Lets wait until the article is edited despite discussions in-progress and we can protect it then. Otherwise, we'd be applying protection in a preventative measure only and doing so isn't within compliance of Wikipedia's protection policy. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:47, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, gotcha. I’ll ping you @Oshwah: again on this page / under this case to update you then? Best. Itaren (talk) 04:53, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Itaren - I'd create a new discussion on my user talk page instead of updating things here. This request here will be archived automatically if nothing changes, which means that any conversation or updates will go along with it. It just makes life easier for everyone by doing it that way. ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:08, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Declined – No changes to the current protection level are required at this point in time. (to close, for bot's benefit). Fish+Karate 08:57, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Full protection. Has been hit with incessant childish vandalism after he made some dumb comments in parliament - and the vandalism has already received some media coverage. Semi-protection hasn't fixed the issue, with several autoconfirmed accounts vandalising the article since then. Given the media coverage, I think it's time we put a stop to this once and for all, and full-protect it for at least a couple of weeks until the media coverage of his comments dies down. The Drover's Wife (talk) 01:59, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. I came here to say this very thing. It's worth noting that the media coverage is also about the article itself. Onetwothreeip (talk) 07:32, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Extended confirmed protected for a period of 3 weeks, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Fish+Karate 09:03, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – Page is consistently smeared by IP vandals. Sk8erPrince (talk) 14:32, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite semi-protection: Persistent disruptive editing – Long-term history of being heavily disruptive. Continued addition of unsourced or poorly sourced content to article by anonymous editors. livelikemusic talk! 15:00, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Ongoing DE of infobox parameters with joke edits. UW Dawgs (talk) 15:05, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite semi-protection: WP:RFPP Requesting change of article page from unprotected to semi protected indefinitely or a period of 24 months. Heavy editing forecasted based on surge in west african region search results Eightnisan 15:43, 15 November 2018 (UTC). Eightnisan 15:43, 15 November 2018 (UTC)

Semi-protection: High level of IP vandalism. Carter (talk) 15:56, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Semi-protection Persistent vandalism. IWI (chat) 16:41, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Semi-protection Persistent vandalism. 220.111.98.188 (talk) 16:46, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection: Persistent level of IP vandalism. Spleodrach (talk) 16:51, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent addition of unsourced or poorly sourced content – Several anon IPs (perhaps the same person) adding unsourced info. I've been removing the worst unsourced stuff, but it keeps getting re-added. One IP cited a wikia fanpage as a source for their re-adds, and threatened to have me blocked. Rather than edit war, I think a short protection will produce more fruitful discussion. Ewen Douglas (talk) 17:58, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Note: after attempting to re-open discussion, I got a note on my talk page telling me "All and any comments posted on my talk page by you will be instantly removed. Look it up." Also, no response on the article talk page to my latest attempts to discuss the changes. Ewen Douglas (talk) 18:12, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That is correct. Your abuse on my talk page is not welcome and will continue to be removed. There is no need to protect this article other than from the edit warring Ewen Douglas. All of the contributions Ewen Douglas is objecting to are sourced accurately and reliably. It is a lie to support their losing edit war to claim otherwise. The wikia references were simply one of many sources provided, something Ewen Douglas fails to mention here. Strange that. There are discussions open on the article talk page and on Ewen Douglas’ talk page, so there is no reason for Ewen Douglas to be repeatedly editing my talk page in an attempt to goad me into their escalating edit war, which has been thoroughly defeated. 211.24.109.210 (talk) 18:33, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism. Classicwiki (talk) If you reply here, please ping me. 18:19, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for reduction in protection level

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin on their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page, click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page," which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page, please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected, please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Unprotection: It is semi-protected indefinitely months ago. The comments make it appear as if the admin was having difficulty with some of the tools used to fight disruptive editing. It doesn't appear to have any recent disruptive edits.

Note: Wouldn't that be because it's semi protected? Have there been any constructive edit requests to show semi protection has become onerous? -- Dlohcierekim (talk) 13:35, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Note: Anachronist's note makes it plain to me that PC was ineffective, that vandalism was perennial, and that SP is needed. Implying something in your note about "having difficulty"? I don't think so. -- Dlohcierekim (talk) 13:39, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have corrections that page protection is preventing. I am going by the comments the admin made. Indef semi-protection is not an acceptable long term solution. Obviously there was difficulty with vandal fighting tools if the solution for this page is indefinite page protection. Please lift the protection. What is the justification for indef page protection? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:8800:1300:4B4:0:0:0:1001 (talk) 03:02, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Please post an edit request so others can see what changes you're proposing. As Dlohcierekim said, the best way to show SP is unnecessary is by showing what changes it's preventing you from making. (Or you could sign up for an account and get it autoconfirmed...) Alex Cohn (let's chat!) 03:09, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It's preventing me from making any corrections. There aren't many but it's annoying to have heavy handed protection. ONUS is on those justifying protection and the default condition is "everyone can edit." I've asked for specific protection on a specific page be lifted so I can contribute. Why the pushback? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:8800:1300:4B4:0:0:0:1001 (talk) 04:10, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    I will grant your request.-- Dlohcierekim (talk) 12:47, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:8800:1300:4B4:0:0:0:1001 (talk) 04:34, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Note: Pending changes nd move protection remain -- Dlohcierekim (talk) 12:49, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.

Create a level 3 header with a link to the article in question, then a {{Pagelinks}} template and then the reason. It looks like this: Example (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) your request here. ~~~~
