Chris Klassen

Chris Klassen is an undergraduate instructor at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada in the department of Religion and Culture.[1]

Personal Life

In the opening of her book "Religion and Popular Culture: A Cultural Studies Approach" she notes that she has an "extremely supportive partner, Akio Saito"[2] and two children, Maxwell and Simon.

Within the work "The Myth Awakens: Canon, Conservatism, and Fan Reception of Starwars," it is emphasized that Chris Klassen favours the hobby of "knitting."[3] In Klassen's biography within the book, editors note that Klassen "knits all the time."[3] The editors conclude that Klassen performs this activity "even in class, sometimes."[3] This idea gives the implication that Klassen may have a personal interest in "knitting."[3]

Career

Throughout 2002 - 2015 Klassen was an Undergraduate Instructor at multiple universities.[4] From 1998 - 2006, Klassen was a Teaching Assistant at York University in Toronto, Ontario and at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario.[5] Between 2006 - 2012, Klassen became a Graduate Professor, also at Wilfrid Laurier.[6] Throughout her teaching career, Klassen has also been a guest lecturer at other Canadian institutions such as York University in Toronto, Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, and also regularly at Wilfrid Laurier.[7] While at York University, Klassen was a chair for a panel at Atkinson College on 'Mothering, Religion and Spirituality'.[8] Between 2002 and 2003, Klassen was a Research Assistant at St. Jerome's University in Waterloo, ON.[9]

Education

Klassen has an B.A., Hons from the University of Waterloo with a major in Religious Studies and graduated in 1998. In 1999 she received a Master's degree from Wilfrid Laurier University. Finally, she earned her PhD in the Philosophy of Women's Studies from York University in 2006.[5] During her education, Klassen won multiple scholarships, including the Dean's Academic Excellence Scholarship at York University for the year 2000-2001, the York Scholarship in 1999-2000, the Ontario Graduate Scholarship for the same year, and finally the Graduate Scholarship at Wilfrid Laurier University for 1998-1999.[4]

Publications

As of 2015, Chris Klassen has published two books, firstly 'Storied Selves: Shaping Identity in Feminist Witchcraft'[10][11] in 2008 and Religion and Popular Culture: A Cultural Studies Approach'[12] in 2014. She also edited Feminist Spirituality: The Next Generation' in 2009.[13]

Awards

In 2016 Chris Klassen won the 'Sustained Excellence in Teaching' for part-time faculty award at Wilfrid Laurier University.[14] She has also won a Research Support Grant in 2008 from Wilfrid Laurier University, a Graduate Student Essay Prize in 2008 for her paper "Sacred Stories: Speculative Fiction Shaping Feminist Witchcraft." and the same prize for the year prior, 2001, for her paper, "Cybercoven: Being a Witch Online."[15]

Contributions

In 2003, Klassan had also written for an online journal, titled "Thirdspace."[16]


Chris Klassen has also contributed to the work "The Myth Awakens: Canon, Conservatism, and Fan Reception of Star Wars,[3]" edited by Ken Derry and John C. Lyden in 2018. Within the work, Klassen titles her selected chapter "Leia "the Hutt Slayer" and Rey "the next generation badass boss bitch.""[3] Here, Klassen offers her perspective on the portrayal of characters within the Star Wars film.[3]
