Confusing Categories

When I first created this category, I was well aware that there was a number of categories, and that it would likely need to be cleaned up. However, the sheer number, both of categories and content within, is staggering.

I have begun this project and fully intend to see it through, but I would like for other editors to be able to add their own suggestions. Specifically, I have considered merging the category tree of cat:Cats with this category tree (the two subjects are very similar).

If anyone would like to comment, please do so here.--SilverTiger12 (talk) 14:54, 4 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Two issues: there is a massive container category called . It is filled with single-article categories (only one or two have multiple articles). The second issue is the current set-up of and , specifically with the categories :Cats in entertainment and related. Should these be merged, so that fictional characters are organized by where from (comics, books, movies, etc.)? And should the current structure of :... about cats remain, or be moved to :Cats in ...?

I also propose splitting Category:Cats in films, to include the following subcats: :Documentaries about cats; :Cats in TV series; :TV series about cats (with restricted focus to TV series that focus solely on cats); and :Cats in movies.--SilverTiger12 (talk) 16:11, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for asking for comments, I'll read the other comments, and maybe you can leave a note at the cats pages that you have ideas to discuss here. Categories, I agree about too many sub-sub-categories, they lose readers at each division. Good idea, please bring the category 'breeds' back to one easily navigable and understood at a glance. "Cats in". Your idea of a cat in a tv series would also be in tv series about cats, but how many tv series are there about cats? (although there are cartoon series with cats as main characters). Wikipedia uses 'film' in place of 'movie'. Most of all, to me, 'cats' are 'cats' and not 'felids'. Names on Wikipedia are usually the most common and best known name in English. 'Cat' is recognizable by close to 100% of the population. 'Felids'? It's possible that few would search for that as the common name of the animals. Anyway, that's some comments, more later. Thanks for your work and ideas. Randy Kryn (talk) 16:28, 4 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
