Bumblebee is a 2018 American science fiction action film centered around the Transformers character of the same name. It is the sixth installment of the live-action Transformers film series and a prequel to 2007's Transformers. Directed by Travis Knight and written by Christina Hodson, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., John Ortiz, Jason Drucker, and Pamela Adlon, with Dylan O'Brien as the voice of Bumblebee. It is the first live-action Transformers film not to be directed by Michael Bay, though he still acts as a producer. Principal photography on the film began on July 31, 2017, in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California.
Bumblebee premiered in Berlin on December 3, 2018, and is scheduled for release in the United States on December 21, 2018, in 2D, Real D 3D, and Dolby Cinema. The film received a generally positive response, becoming the first in the franchise to do so since the first film in the franchise, with particular praise towards it’s lighter tone compared to the previous installments.
Plot
In 1987, the Autobots led by Optimus Prime are preparing to leave their homeworld Cybertron and relocate to planet Earth when they are ambushed by their enemies, the Decepticons, and scattered across the galaxy. Young scout B-127 reaches Earth alone, crash-landing in California, where he is immediately attacked by military operative Jack Burns and Decepticon spy Blitzwing, who damages B-127’s voice box before being destroyed. Severely wounded, B-127 scans a nearby 1967 Volkswagen Beetle and goes into stasis.
Two years later, B-127 is found and repaired by local teenager Charlie Watson, who befriends him and nicknames him “Bumblebee”. With Charlie’s help, Bumblebee learns how to communicate through the radio and receives a message from Optimus urging him to protect Earth in their absence. Bumblebee is later discovered by Charlie’s neighbor Memo, who agrees to protect his secret due to his unrequited feelings for Charlie. Meanwhile, Decepticons Shatter and Dropkick arrive on Earth masquerading as peacekeepers and persuade Sector Seven, a secret government agency that monitors extraterrestrial activity on Earth, to help them find and capture Bumblebee, whom they claim is a dangerous criminal. Burns, who has been recruited by Sector Seven following his encounter with Bumblebee, begrudgingly works with them.
Bumblebee, Charlie and Memo are ambushed by Shatter and Dropkick, who extract the Autobots’ whereabouts from Bumblebee and conspire to use Sector 7‘s resources to call the Decepticons to Earth. Bumblebee and Charlie pursue them to a secret base, where Bumblebee kills Dropkick and saves Burns, while Charlie disables Shatter’s beacon. Shatter attempts to kill Charlie, but Bumblebee manages to save her and kill Shatter. Realizing that Bumblebee is not the enemy, Burns lets him go, and Bumblebee bids farewell to Charlie before leaving to find the Autobots.
In a post-credits scene, Bumblebee reunites with Optimus in the woods, and they discuss a new mission as the remaining Autobots begin arriving on Earth.

Reception
Box office projections
In the United States and Canada, Bumblebee will be released alongside Aquaman, Welcome to Marwen, and Second Act, and is projected to gross around $40 million over its five-day opening weekend.[41]
Critical response
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 100% based on 14 reviews, with an average rating of 7.8/10.[42] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 73 out of 100, based on 11 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[43]
Liz Shannon Miller of IndieWire gave the film a "B+" and wrote, "...there are many scenes where giant robots fight each other, and in those scenes, you can actually see what's happening. The Autobots and Decepticons toss each other around with slick judo-like moves and blast each other with abandon, and the cinematography and editing hold still long enough to let you enjoy each moment."[44] Peter Debruge of Variety called the film a "quieter, more character-driven Transformers origin story" and wrote that "Bumblebee is basically the movie that fans of the 1980s animated series wanted all along."[45]
