Pelletizing is the process of producing spheres of iron ore, typically 8 to 18 mm in diameter. The process combines agglomeration and thermal treatment to convert the raw ore into pellets with characteristics appropriate for use in a blast furnace.
Processing Stages
The pelletizing process can be grouped into three general stages:
- preparation of raw materials
- formation of the raw pellets
- thermal processing
The preparation of the substances cousins has for objective to adjust the characteristics of the iron ore (pellet feed) to the demanded ones for the production of raw pellets. In this period of training the mixture is prepared to pelletizer, that it can hold different types of ores and additives, these used to modify the chemical composition and the metallurgic properties of the pellets. In general, the following stages are included in this period of training: concentration / separation, homogenization of the substances cousins, milling, classification, increasing thickness, homogenization of the pulp and filtering.
The formation of raw iron ore pellets, also known as pelletizing, has the objective of producing pellets in an appropriate band of sizes and with resistance mechanics enough to support the stages of transference and transport the equipment of pelletizing and of thermal treatment enters.
In order to confer to the pellets high resistance metallurgic mechanics and appropriate characteristics, the same ones are submitted to a thermal processing, that involves stages of drying, daily pay burn, burn, after-burn and cooling (ina a cooling tower). The time of duration of each stage and the temperature the one that is submitted the pellets have strong influence on the final product quality.
