The Hollow Kingdom Trilogy
The Hollow Kingdom Trilogy is a fantasy trilogy by Clare B. Dunkle. It includes The Hollow Kingdom, Close Kin, and In the Coils of the Snake. The Hollow Kingdom was published in 2003. It follows Kate and Emily, human sisters who meet Marak,the goblin king of a secret underground world. He kidnaps them and takes them to his kingdom, where he forces Kate to marry him.
Close Kin follows Emily, Kate's younger sister, and Sable, one of the last elves near Hallow Hill. Emily is proposed to by Seylin, her childhood friend, but doesn't take him seriously and refuses. He decides to leave, journeying to 'find his people', the elves. After he leaves, Emily realizes that she does indeed love him and goes out after him. A side-plot follows Sable, Irina, Thorn, and two other elves live their lives in squalor.
In the Coils of the Snake follows Matilda.

Plot introduction

Now Kate and Emily have come to live at Hallow Hill. Brought up in a civilized age, they have no idea of the land's dreadful heritage-until, that is, Marak decides to tell them himself. Intelligent, pleasant, and completely pitiless, Marak is a powerful magician who claims to be a king, and he has very specific plans for the two new girls who have trespassed into his kingdom.
